My .02 cents.
Window nets are almost dangerous at a driving school. If in case of a rollover you'll need the track workers to be able to pull you from that car as quick as possible. Window nets will only hinder there rescue efforts but possibly your own. It's difficult enough to release your 5 or 6 points in a rollover as well as pop off a window net and climb out. I am hoping to bring this up when the time is right. Not sure how the rules are or when they are changed/updated etc.

I'm a rescue worker not on the track, but in my local town. You might be surprised to see how quickly we could cut through a window net.

I am guessing conehunter is TomH? LOL! Rules can/should be discussed throughout the year, though rules change submissions can only made after the season is over, Nov/Dec.

If BMWCCA has deemed them unsafe for driver schools i would assume it was for the reason of accessing the driver quicker. Like I said my .02 cents. Plus I don't have them.

BMWCCA does not allow window nets because they do not want students to have that as an excuse for not giving a point by.

Where did u hear that? We dont let instructors use them either.
I heared that at the drivers meeting at a WMC event.

When did the practice/rule change?

It must be a club by-law of ours (patroon bmwcca).

When I attended the Aug 06 WMC event they told us no window nets. I usually run a net, so after the drivers meeting I questioned it with one of the event organizers.

BTW I attended one of their events in the spring of 04, and I believe I ran with a net. That was about the time they changed there insurance, where classifying all non-instructors as students. Therefore requiring students ride with instructors.

My guess would be that not having a net on the passenger side (with an instructor in the seat) would constitute unequal safety.

window net vs arm restraint

I understand that there is no practical difference in safety on the track between the two but operationally it becomes a problem. If you allow an option it becomes a problem for the safety workers as you now expect them to know which cars have window nets and which have arm restraints and that can distract them from other stuff. Do you want to get black flagged for not having a window net just to point out you have arm restraints? I know that I did that a bunch as control over the years. I can tell you that people will not install window nets and then say that they forgot the arm restraints as many a convertable driver told me.

If he has, it has not yet been considered.
On another note, we had a very upset driver at our Oct 25/26 event because he was told to return to the pits for his arm restraints. He was driving an open car and sputtered that SCCA didn not require them. Is that true?

You'd have to ask Bruce about arm restraints in SCCA.

So, now it's too late to submit a rules change proposal, right?
