99-01 911 Carrera on the track or 01-03 Z06
I am thinking about selling my 04 350Z for a 99-01 911 or 01-03 Z06 on the track. I am looking for a car that I can use as a daily driver as well as track events and autox. I know both cars i am looking at are faster cars than the Z, but just how bigh do you guys think the gap is? I am judging stock vs stock.
I think a Z06 on something like the RA1 will probably get mid 59s or low 60s at a track like Lime Rock
99-01 996 will do 61-62 maybe?
Anyone seen the cars I mentioned above do those laps?

There were 2 2001-2004 Z06s at Nov. 2006 LRP . Both were under 1:00 in the time trials, one set the record for SSU at 59.6 , the other was just behind it. I beleive one was on Nittos. I had a 2001 Z06, they are an incredible car, easy to go fast in yet 25-28 mpg on the street.

That rule is true When I went from the Z06 to the Mustang Cobra I had to buy a Miata just to switch, but the Miata was so slow I could never get it to the track on time for an event so I just sold it to Neal Johnson .He's done 3 student days --- they are good for that.

My 2 cents while I wait to fix my camaro and am putting the finishing touches on my GLHS.
Vette owners chime in. You would probably want a diff cooler and big oil cooler to run long sessions in 90 degree heat. The brakes are okay but most serious vettes run a Porsche 911 brake conversion up front for track use.
At nhis in 90 plus degree heat I got the oil temp light lit in a C5 Z06 after a dozen laps or so.
The 911 you can pretty much beat the snot out of it. There is no street based car faster out of turn 3 and up the hill at nhis than a 911.
Both are great cars. You can't go wrong either way and I'm jealous!

I think it comes down bang for the buck. Forgive me for being so pragmatic. Which one is cheaper to buy? Then cheaper to maintain & service? Which one has lower costs for consumables like tires & brakes? I know there is a TON of info for setup (even stock classes) for the Z06. I'm in agreement. I do spend some time on the ls1 forums and alot of guys posting do the porsche conversion and love it.
C6Z06 uphill at nhis. I would like to see it too!!! (course, from either of my drivers seats i wouldn't be watching for long. It kind of sucks that some of these new cars are so unbelievably fast, even on street tires.

I rode with one of my instructors who has one and it was amazing. The amount of torque it had was unbelievable. Vette guys. The F body guys are mostly talking about installing 150 hp NOS setups...
I'm a little surprised to hear that a new z06 could really put all the power down coming out of 3, but you were there.
I have been behind James Laughlin and Peter Fail in 3 and those guys are just WOT putting the power down.
John Spain's student had a new z06 at the glen. He was totally impressed with it. (It was way faster than the miata )

His car is not entirely stock either, he was developing a coil over package @ NHIS that day and had used Hoosiers on all four corners.
He was completely stock @ LRP though, with the exception of Michelin Pilot Sport Cups.

I read an article on the new Z06 vs. viper a while back
In the quarter mile the Z06 posted a slightly quicker time but everyone who tested the car said controlling wheel spin was a serious problem (sounds like a good problem to me)

The C5 and C6 Corvettes seem to have traded away better weight distribution for legroom and a longer wheelbase. C4s were 50/50, C5 and C6 more like 53/47.
I never liked the idea of having the transmission back with the diff, even the Porsche embodiments. Rather than providing a more even weight distribution, it seems to me it just pushes the rear wheels aft, giving worse weight distribution (more weight up front).
Obviously the C5 was overall a huge improvement over the C4, but that's one area where, I believe, the best performance solution was discarded in favor of better ergos.
Of course development of shocks/springs/swaybar settings can improve things, but much less percentage of static weight on the rears means reduced drive up the hill at 3-4 at NHIS.
