Audi Folks
Hi, Just wondering if any of you out there are familiar with Audi's? I am thinking of getting my wife a 99-00 A-6 wagon awd and would like to know any common problems to look for, thanks for any help in advance. Jim

James, I haven't owned an Audi since my 1980 5000 turbo- but at my shop we have seen plenty of mid to late 90s A4/A6/Passat with incredibly noisey ball joints. They creek something fierce when you turn the wheel. I believe there was a recall (silent or otherwise ?). Be aware that there are 2 upper and 2 lower balljoints/control arms at each front corner...For you Miata drivers that's a total of 8 front ball joints #-o

Yup, the ball joints can get noisey. I've only had to replace one so far, on my 2000 A4 w/ 110k miles. Rear wheel bearings are a 'maintenance item' and are toast every 60k or so. The 3.0L cars are underpowered. Go with the 2.7T or 4.2, if you can.
Quattro AWD is excellent, and has kept me in the Audi camp for a while.

Money pit!
I had a 98 A4 2.8QTR and the tranny went at 49k. Power steering about 40k. Rear wheel bearing 55k.
Then a 2000 S4. Tranny input seal at 25k. I bought it used and dumped it at that point since the warantee was just ending. Dropping a quattro tranny and re-installing is a 15 hour job. I loved the car but they are expensive to run and do break down in expensive ways.
No more Audis for me, ever!
