U Gotta LOVE a Girl with WOOD ...

Post by UniqueAngle » Wed Dec 20, 2006 4:22 pm

Ok, now that I have your attention <ahem!>, Since it's sorta winter time, I am already going stir crazy & felt the need to test the SVX .... so let me explain:

Ok, I'm sure you're wondering about the subject line there. Since I now have a house with a wood burning fireplace, I decided I should get some firewood. Found a local guy that had some dead trees recently cut down in his yard and just wanted the wood gone. He was nice enough to cut/split it. This stack in the pic is 4'x4'x4' (or 1/2 a cord or 64 cubic feet of wood). Wood pile is 1/3 oak & 2/3 black walnut. Burns nice (tried it out last night).

How'd I get it to my house, you might ask? The Subaru SVX. It took 2 trips - but that was all. How much does this all weigh (IE: how cruel was I to my car)?

Well, here's the break down
weights obtained from:
http://homepage.mac.com/jeremybaker/tow ... 20wood.pdf

1/2 cord of wood = 64 cu/ft
1/6 cord = oak @ 49 lbs/cu ft = 1043.7 lbs
2/6 cord = walnut @ 43 lbs/cu ft = 1831.8 lbs

Total estimated weight: 2975.5 lbs (1.5 tons)

So, figure I loaded up the SVX with approx 1500 lbs of wood for each of two trips - didn't bottom out once ;-) Sure glad it only had to go a mile or two down the road.

Who loaded & unloaded? The supplier helped load, but I unloaded all of it myself.

So, I guess the SVX isn't as wimpy as I thought ... should I try towing next? Anyone else likely to do stupid car tricks in the winter?

Thankfully, to my knowledge, you are first girl with wood I've ever met.

Given the insane amount of spam we've had lately, it is a good thing I recognized your login name! My itchy trigger finger hovers above the DELETE key... ;)

Turbo Subbies don't tow well... that's all I have to say 'bout that...
If I had to hauk all that wood in my Alfa I'd be taking about 100 trips...

Hey Stefan, don't knock the cargo capacity of the Subies. One of them even packs in extra cans of gas in case it runs out on course  But you are right, the Alfa would get mite crowded.
