Classes Revised for 2007

The following Showroom Stock Classes were adopted by the Board at its meeting on October 15. ST classifications also change accordingly, as specified in the rules. Prepared classes are not affected.

Several other rules changes were also approved.

The Board will discuss additional rules proposals at its November meeting.

A friend of mine owns a SSC 99 Honda Civic Si and claims to run LRP at 1:04.6. I'm sure he's an awesome driver, but it made me rethink SS classifications for the Civic. I ran down the list again that Nate posted above and found the oddity. Strictly based on numbers, I found the following from edmunds.com:

(I posted the SER as a general reference). Anyway, the 02-05 Si is rated 17.15 lbs/hp and is in SSB where as the 99-00 Si is rated even better at 16.26 lbs/hp and is in SSC where most other civic's are over 18.6 lbs/hp.

did I miss something? something more compelling that I have not noticed? torque?

Based on Honda relative data, I would guess that 99-00 Civic Si belongs in SSB, where as 02-05 Civic Si belongs in SSC. I can't agrue for "stock" performance levels, but I know Honda gurus all argee that the double-wishbone suspension of the 99-00 is far suporior to the suspension in the 02-05, which prompted Honda to change things in the 06+ Si models. The double-wishbone suspension would make a signficant difference when applying suspension upgrades in ST and up.

Not to knock the massive amount of work that, I'm sure, has been invested in defining the new classifications, but......... this example really jumps off the page. How could much faith be placed on these revisions when an STI is bumped DOWN a class. Anyway who's even paying a little attention sees how extremely well prepared these cars out of the box. It's as easy as this...look at the results. Furthermore, it seems clear that certain vehicles should be bumped out of the SS category right from the factory, the most obvious example is the ZO6 C6. By bumping the factory "Super Cars" into ST groups is would be easier to properly categorize the remainder of the "normal" production vehicles.

Jeff,

Using the STi classification as an example and writing off the whole new classification system is as unwise as finding one bad apple and throwing the whole basket away for it. I doubt there's any classification system in racing that makes everyone happy.

With that being said, I agree that the STi/Evo could be class killers in SSGT/ST1, and enough of us drive STi's and Evo's to upset the SSGT/ST1 regulars.

In SSU/STGT, they will get killed by Z06's and C6's, which are appearing more regularly at events now.

I'm not sure what the solution is, but the rules can't be structured in a manner that will leave us with 90 different SS classes. Every class will have its 800lb gorilla.

I agree with this part. It is just impossible to keep up with the Z06 Vettes, the last two events they were a good 5 seconds faster than the rest of the crowd bone stock.

I'm flattered that someone would resort to such measures to beat the STi .

The STi is, after all, a humble grocery getter that puts down only 230hp to the wheels on an all wheel dyno, runs on skinny 235 wide tires, weighs in at a corpulent 3350lbs, and has springs that are softer than RyanC's head. 8)

So the Z06 puts down much more power, has much bigger tires, it weighs at least 200lbs less, has a track tuned suspension AND its in the same class? I like these odds! 8)

btw, I hear the Z06 has a pretty good size trunk for grocery shopping. Although most of the space will probably be used for all those trophies its going to steal from the STis next year. :D :wave:

I apologize for jumping-in with a disparaging post w/o backing it up with concrete proposals for improving that which I am criticizing... in my book this is bad form.

However, by the same token, it's hard to casually review the classifications and NOT comment about some perceived shortcomings.

I guess if I were to offer the beginnings of a proposed solution, I would follow-up with my previous post. We shouldn't necessarily create additional SS classes, rather, we should categorize Super-cars as ST from the factory.

For porsche lovers...why should C2 993 be in the same class as a 996 turbo?

For Vettes ... why should a C5 be in the same class as a ZO6?

For Ferrari ... why should a 348 be in the same class as a 360?

How about a 1999 Mustang Cobra versus a 2006 Viper Coupe?

It seems reasonable to bump the elite vehicles to STGT while keeping the next tier @ SSU. I mean be real, a 1995? lexus GS400 versus a '07 STi in SSGT???

One more point, if you have a C5 and go about modifying it so it is mechanically identical to a ZO6 you would be in SPA while the ZO6 would be in SSU, how does that make sense? At a minimum it seems that factory tuned vehicles should be more closely scrutinized particularly in relation to the more "showroom stock" version of that same car. Btw, this same example holds true for WRXs
