Seat question?

Post by bottledbird68 » Thu Nov 09, 2006 7:20 pm

Looking for some opinions on a pair of race seats for my 87 firebird. I'm planning on caging the car over the winter (assuming I find the time) and would rather not use the stock cloth seats. I've looked at the recaro's but don't really want to spend $600+ per seat. Any other more budget friendly options or am I saving my pennies? The car also sees lots of street time so some comfort is also a concern. Looking for any and all opinions so fire away. I'd like to be able to stay in place without wedging myself into the door panel while I autocross/track the car lol.

If you are running SPA, use 1 good driving seat (checkout some imort tuner mags) and bolt a plastic childs seat for the passenger area. This was done by Frank Perron in his 71 Barracuda. Rules don't say they have to match. If street driving car, again checkout tuner mags or Racer mag.

That's kind of what I was wondering. Are the "APC" specials or their knock offs good enough? I don't think I'd use the APC's because I wouldn't be able to stand the letters stitched into the headrest but similar ones I might go for, assuming they are actually ok.

Try Corbeau seats. They are far less expensive, and there are some Subie guys who use them in their rally cars. The only complaints have been that the material seems to wear out quicker.

Also, you might want to consider a seat that's 5/6 point harness capable, with the hole on the bottom. I personally wouldn't get a 4 point harness for track, and don't feel too secure with the sub belt coming over the seat front.

I was actually looking at the corbeau's last night. Good to know they are alright seats. And I definitely planned on getting ones 5 point capable. It's one of my main reasons for wanting aftermarket seats in the first place.

Something else to consider -- if your rig does not have at least a 4 pt rollbar don't do a racing seat. Rollbar & racing seat -- good, racing seat and no rollbar -- very bad (in case of a roll over)..
