Having difficulty changing tire on trailer without air wrenc
Having difficulty changing tire on trailer without air wrenc
Hi
I am on the side of the road in northboro with trailer tire blowout. I am having difficulty removing lug nuts without air wrench. The wheel turns. I cant get enough weight on it to stop it from turning. Is there a way to force the brakes to stay on? I did not try pulling the safety switch .

Called good sam but after 2 hours they did not find anyone.

Maybe the flat is turning because the other wheel is inflated which is holding the trailer weight (assuming you have two axle trailer...if not, just ignore this post !). If so, maybe take off the good wheel and put weight on the flat....maybe block trailer so you get enough weight on wheel to get lugs off but not too much weight to do damage.
Re: Having difficulty changing tire on trailer without air w
In this video they break the lugs loose with the tire/rim on the ground so the wheel doesn't roll/spin:

Can't you just use the emergency stop button on your brake controller?

All set. Fred ferguson came by and showed me some tricks. Will bring thick board to drive onto next time.
I wonder if i should have 10 ply tires instead of 8 .

...especially helpful if your jack cannot lift a loaded trailer (or you're lazy like me). Check trailer tire pressures, they tend to lose air and then overheat. Also check that lugs are not loose... or torqued to 1000 ft lbs (ditto for the tow vehicle).n1gzd wrote:... Will bring thick board to drive onto next time.

Thanks. Pressires always 65 torque 120. I check them often including this morning. If 8 ply d rated that came with the trailer is ok then the problem is that the tires are from china or trash junk in the street near where i keep it.

Your wheels are torqued to 120Ft/lbs? That's more than most cylinder heads. Try 80-85 ft/lbs.

No wonder you had a hard time getting them loose.

100-120 is the spec for the steel wheel 6-lug trailer wheels (the aluminum's are 85), the problem was just that due to complete deflation the wheel was spinning as the other wheel picked up the load.

Thanks, Chris.
I didn't realize steel wheels were so high (mine are aluminum), or that spinning wheel thing.

Re: Having difficulty changing tire on trailer without air w
Torque spec is due to the size of the lugbolt being torqued, not the wheel material.
