Yes that 904 picture is a kit by Beck. How many 904's do you suppose there are in New England? I forget, but thought they only produced 1 or 2 hundred. I wonder if the one you worked on was the same one that showed up at COM years ago. Probably not, I suppose.

The real one had the cool Lemans style side windows that slide forward and back.

I am just going to guess here, but for the price it takes to repair that car, you could do the tube frame and buy a 904 body from those folks. Then you would have a new car that looks great, goes much faster and safer too. Might be less likely to hit things with it too, and if you do it would be more repairable.

A tube frame for a midi seems easier from I was seeing when I started my tube frame project. It's very straightforward whereas the front engine really complicates things.

there were a total of 102 904's built . as far as i know there are none in new england and only 7 in the US .
they were not brought into the states . they real ones all have slides for side windows . there is no room to have roll down windows on the real 904's . to put fuch wheels on them you have to mill the backs of the rims some like 10MM to have the wheels fit in the wheel houses .
the end cost to do the resto in the 904 i did was just over 100K with out parts .
so you could do a kit for far less than that . the 904's came with a 1966cc 4 cylinder dohc motor . most of the kits use a vw/porsche 914 4 cylinder motor . a little about the 914's they were only sold in the states as a porsche every were else they were sold under the VW name .

I think the 914's were all made by Karmann and sent to either Porsche or Volkswagen for final assembly, could be wrong though.

the 944 and the 914 were cars that VW contracted out to porsche to design . that is why many of the parts on the cars are VW/AUDI parts . VW had porache do the R and D work on the cars also . only the 914/6 want to porsche as a rolling chassis for porsche to do the install of there flat 6 motor and a porsche gear box .
vw backed out of the 944 deal and porsche desided to sell the car as there own under the porsche name . so at that point porsche then needed a motor . they came up with a dumb ass idea to use the idea of the 928 motor cut in half . thou no parts are the same between the two motor the idea was use . and what a bad idea it was ! it's a very heavy motor for it's size it's very under powered for it's 2.5 L size and all in all a POS motor . they should have taken the idea of the Audi motor that was going to be used in the 944 and run with that .

Oh, don't for get my roof leak. Evidently the little shunt at Tremblant cause the roof section welds to spread.
