Here's how you check the codes in your miata. There isn't a code-reader-jack per-se in the OBD I miatas that I know of. The diagnostics port under the hood is more a set of specific wires in the electrical system to use for specific tests - either to put put the ECU into a diagnostics mode or test certain signals/voltages so you don't have to hunt for them in the wiring harness.
