One way to get your fix if you can't make it to COM events
One way to get your fix if you can't make it to COM events
Things look a lot different running around our playground on two wheels as opposed to four. It took a few sessions to get comfortable, but oh was that a blast. For those of you with bikes, if you haven't tried this yet it's a must-do. For those of you without bikes... you should get bikes.
Cheers,
Jason

Dam you. I want to do it. Main thing holding me back is that I don't want to buy full leathers.

My first on track was at Thunderhill in Ca. aboard a 916 Ducati. Absolute blast! In all honesty though,I prefer cars..spins and wrecks are much less painfull.Guess I am aging... Nice bike,by the way!

I did two days actually. One with MotoMarket on Memorial Day, and one with Seacoast Cycles on June 3rd.
Steve, my first day out I was running with a guy on an older BMW, an R1100 maybe? It had all the hard luggage, centerstand, you name it. And he was going really quick on that monster. You'd have no problem on the VFR.
No times, unfortunately. As far as I know none of the bike clubs allow you to use a timer. Lap times wouldn't have meant much anyway, as boih days we were running though makeshift chicanes in the South Oval while they had the infield track all dug up.
Mick, most clubs rent leathers... and if you have a jacket and pants that zip together that works too. Most clubs allow the textile clothing now too, as long as it's got armor and it's not the lightweight mesh style.
You're right about the consequences, Mark. And I do think it'll be harder to find the limit on the bike. In a car you can slide, spin, run it through the gravel... you can blow it pretty bad and get away with a lot. The chances of actually crashing your car at a COM event is pretty slim. On the other hand, with the bike I feel like as soon as I start to slide it my ass is going to hit the pavement. I'm not really afraid of getting hurt (maybe it's cause I haven't crashed yet!), but I don't want to make a mess of my bike. Time to build a track bike I guess...

A friend of mine at work has been doing motorcyle track days for a couple of years, and he says that injuries and crashed bikes are pretty common. He was out of work for a week when he crashed in turn 3, and later had to repair on his new bike when he went down exiting turn 6.
Jay, is you bike a monster?

Yup, if you blow it in a car most of the time you can get away with it. But on a bike... you're going to do some damage. It's all about that risk/reward balance.
Nope, it's a Hypermotard. Same basic engine (1178cc air-cooled twin), but a more upright riding position and 'motard styling.

Jay - You should get a race car.

You know, I think I actually used to have one of those things. I can't seem to find it though. I wonder where it went...

I work with a Scotsman who raced Isle of Man on a Manx motorcycle in the 70's. The videos are terrifying! He has 2 pins in his thumbs, a rod in one of his forearms, and is missing a large amount of flesh on his right leg from a crash in 1977.
