Yokohomo A032-arse?
Yokohomo A032-arse?
I picked up some super-duper-cheap Yokohama A032R's (S compound, yes I know, that's not optimal) early last year. They seem to be made of iron - just won't wear out. However, their grip seems to only be marginally better than the stock tires. They aren't anything like the RA1's, but it might be because I was running pressures too high/low.
Anyone have experience running these? I'm specifically interested in what you discovered about tire pressures. Did they heat up too quickly? Too slowly? Where did they seem to grip optimally? I don't have a pyrometer, but I found RA1's seem to do well when they are about 40-41 hot. I have a 350Z, which weighs about 9500lbs.
Thanks,
Raj

"I have a 350Z, which weighs about 9500lbs"
My F350 only weighs 6500lbs. You must carry a lot of ballast
I had Yoko A048's on my Atom as OEM (same S compound,I believe).I think they are similar to the AO32? I autocrossed on them a few times ,svtoa Devens style,so more like cross country style autocross.
Never liked them.Too unpredictible..no I take that back..they were predictibly crappy. Can't help with tire temps or pressures,as my car never heated them over air temperature and it weighs a lithe 1750lbs with me in it.(I ran them at 15psi mostly;tried more pressure, got worse)
When I switched to V710's (and a bit wider as well) I ran FTD, twice, against some very fast people. Same light car.No other changes.
In this case,I believe it was the tires.
Just my two cents worth...

Well, that doesn't sound very encouraging.

AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have these A032R's that refuse to die, and some RA1's that seem like they have maybe 2 sessions left on them. I have a set of fresh R888's but I was saving them for WGI/MT. Well, I guess I'll have an excuse for being slow with the Yokomommas.chaos4NH wrote:Raj: Buy some freakin' decent tires!

Re: Yokohomo A032-arse?
raj, I am running 7 year old a032rs on teh Civic, and they are so grippy still that I keep breaking axles. They don't ever die. I think I run the pressures about 40ish hot but then again I rarely check tires, nor do I have to, since I can't seem to keep the car from breaking for very long
Re: Yokohomo A032-arse?
Ryan.....I think the perfect solution for you is to just drive slower. Problem solved.

A032Rs are no where near as sticky as Hoosier R6. I use A032R on the street with my lotary because they have tread. Not so good on the track.

Hi Bud, You got these at the begining of last year? Did you buy them new? When did they stop making that tire anyways?
I have picked up some small (205) Hankook discontinued hard compound tires. $80. a piece. On the bright side I should still be fast on the straights.

You guys are HARSH!!
When I was racing bikes, I started out with Bridgestones. Once I got faster, I ran Yokahama for 60 minutes at the old Briar park. They were totally, completely, ridiculously SCARY. Compound was way too hard, never ground in, the sidewalls flexed like a bungie and the tread just would not heat up.
I pulled them and bought on-site Metzlers, which I ran forever. Very predictable.
My wife's car came with Yokahama's on it. Same thing - really bad sidewall flex, poor dry traction, slippery under pressure. Swapped to Conti's and it's fine.
Must be the compound.

Haha, that was epic. "I have all wheel drive, I can just gun this thing out." So I did, and the car sank deeper. I even had mud on my roof liner.
