Car Classification Questions
Hi all, I'm a new COMSCCer and I have a couple of questions.

I will be attending the September NHIS event. I will only be there for the Driver Training day (finances prohibit competition at this time). I believe that my car falls into the SSB category, but I'd like to be sure.

I have a 1998 Integra RS, modified thusly:

Intake
205/50-15 wheel and tire combo (stock is 195/60-14, and I believe 195/55-15s were optional)
3-pt. shock tower brace
Short Shifter w/bushings

I don't think most of these mods would bump into another class; the only questionable ones being wheels and tires.

I hope this is in the correct forum, and not too stupid...thanks for your time!

Re: Car Classification Questions
The expert on car classification would be Brad Pelletier. Brad is the Chief Steward and Rules Chair.

My opinion would be that your car would be moved from Showroom Stock to Street Stock due to the body stiffeners and the after market shifter.

The only changes allowed to your car are the specific modifications spelled out in the rules for each classification. Generally if it isn't listed as allowable - you can't do it.

Since you don't plan to Time Trial I doubt if anyone would complain about your car classification.

See you on the 20th.

Re: Car Classification Questions
OK, thanks. I was hoping that since I wasn't competing it wouldn't matter too much.

Can't wait to see y'all there....

Showroom stock classes are just that - showroom stock. Your wheel and tire upgrade alone bumps you to Street Stock (not to mention the other goodies). Sorry for the bad news.
Re: Car Classification
Oh, I see. Well, I don't consider Street Stock to be a bad thing, I just wanted to be sure of my classification.

Re: Car Classification Questions
OK, one more question: are stock lap and shoulder belts admissible in Street Stock? The rules state that "Y-type" shoulder restraints are OK for Showroom. It doesn't say that four or five point harnesses are required in Street, just recommended. I just want to be sure, thanks again....

Re: Car Classification Questions
The way I interpret the rule is that stock belts are permissible in Showroom and Street Stock. If you add an after market shoulder belt in Street Stock it cannot be a "Y" type.

No matter your preference, the drivers and passengers (instructors) restraints must be the same.
Re: Car Classification Questions
I just reveiwed the rules and note two confusing issues.
The first is in regards to the types of restraints. To paraphrase the rules:

A 5 point harness is required in Prepared and SP. A 5 point is STRONGLY suggested for SS and ST. A "Y" type shoulder harness is allowed is SS. No mention is made of a mandatory requirement for ST for either type.

The second issue involves tires. Now I will post this and either duck or run like hell.

The SS rules state the tires must be of "as delivered" construction and DOT legal.

ST and SP rules simply state that the tires must be DOT legal.

There is no mention of a tire requirement in Prepared meaning it is open to real race tires. But is it also open to recaps with the cord showing?

The "as delivered construction" phrase is only included in the SS class. The could be interpreted as meaning SS must run street tires as delivered.

Think I will now go out a polish my Kumho's with a little WD40 to increase the shine while the arrows fly.
Re: Car Classification Questions
Belts: stock belts are acceptable in SS and ST. This is different from years
past when ST required harnesses.

Tires:
SS "as delivered construction" tire rule these days means that all SS cars must
run radials. Note that Hoosier made a bias-ply race tire for a while (they may still),
so they would not be legal in SS.

ST and SP cars could run a bias-ply tire as long as they are DOT legal.

Prepared cars can run any tire that passes tech.

Section VI.A.1 of the rulebook specifically outlaws retreads/recaps for all classes.

Self-preservation should dictate not running tires with cord showing!!
Tires
To add to what Herb said, I have a set of DOT Hoosier bias ply tires, and though I haven't run them yet, I'll probably do so at some point just to see what they're like. THe only advantage I can see is thet they are very light, even lighter than the Hoosier radials.
