NITTO Tires - experience? Feedback?

Post by StephanAlfa » Sun Mar 11, 2007 12:07 pm

Does anyone have experience or feedback on Nitto Tires (model NT-01 seems most appropriate for time trials)?
website: www.nittotire.com

Performance?
Price?
Comparison with Toyo or other?

Some feedback on-line:
Fast off of the shelf with no shaving or prior heat cycling. 6/32nds tread depth new. But not having to shave them is a huge benefit for us. We've had our share of tire shavers butcher a tire for us now and again (money down the drain).
And durable - we did the 3 days at PIR and the next event at Buttonwillow on the same set. We find them similar to the RA-1 in compound.
And they are fast - Ralph broke the old HP record at PIR by 2 seconds!
Our overall impression - similar in compound to the RA-1, but with a better tread pattern and sidewall

Price (depending on size): $123 - $164/ tire

Overall very good info on-line but I wanted to get the real deal from you folks.

Nitto tires

Post by jadams » Mon Mar 12, 2007 6:29 pm

Where can you buy some of these tires anyway? I see that Tire Rack doesn't carry them. Is there a site online where I can find pricing? If they are truly that cheap $164/tire I would be willing to try them out. That sounds a lot better than $250/tire.

315 -35 17?

Post by jadams » Mon Mar 12, 2007 9:29 pm

Do they make a 315 - 35-17 tire?? Discount tire only shows pricing for a 315 30 18, but I thought on the Nitto website that they made a 315 35 17. Anyone know?

I called Express Tire Center in Milford, NH in 489 Elm (by the drive in cineman off the bypass). The manager John L'Hereux is a friend of mine (former Tire Warehouse). (603) 249-9119.
A 205/55ZR/14 for the Alfa will cost $162.50 mounted and balanced. Need to order and will take about 7-10 business days.
Heard good things about it compared to Toyos.

According to the Nitto website the chart for tire size NT-01 says it's available. Need to call the dealer for price...that you can do eh? 8)

Sure I think I can handle it from here. Thanks for the info. The place that is in Worcester is supposedly 2 miles from my house. It is weird that I never knew it existed!! I will have to check it out.

Nitto is owned by Toyo. They openned a large manufacturing facility somewhere down South and seem commited to the weekend racer. Good competition for the other "sport" tire manufacturers.
I should have remember Express Tire, I stopped there to inquire about the new Nitto Invo a few months back. Very accomodating people.

Got a response from NITTO on comparison vs. Toyo:
"Dear Stephan,
We currently do not have any data comparing the Nitto NT01 with the Toyo RA-1. As for pricing you can visit www.tires.com. We thank you for your interest in Nitto Tires. "

So I went to tires.com and ordered mine - free shipping! cost me a total of $492 for a set of 4 (205/55/14). Not a bad deal. Still have to pay about $20/tire for mounting and balancing.

Then let the tests begin! :sunny: :thumbleft:
Fell like the Michelin Bibendo ad on "white Knuckle driving" bring it in .. woooshhh-zoomm-by! ... or not..."
I better bring it in or Bill Miskoe will shout at me

The guys at Express Tire in Milford (used to be Tire Whorehouse) have always been great to me - even though I abuse them by buying tires online and then bringing them in to be mounted. They even fixed a flat for me and refused to be paid. If they can get the Nittos for a reasonable price mounted and balanced, I'd say that's the way to go. All I have to do now is wear out my Toyo RA-1s

The skinny on the SCCA Forum is that the NT01 is same compound as the RA-1:

I think this is the 'real' difference...
