Subaru guys, please read! Thinking about getting one
Subaru guys, please read! Thinking about getting one
I was thinking about getting a used STI or even a race-prepped impreza for track use (but I'd like it to remain street legal so I can use it as a winter car). I was wondering if there are any shops in the northeast specializing in getting Subarus race-ready, perhaps even selling race-ready cars?
I'd also like to know what is the best Subaru/STI newsgroup for learning more about car prep and racing/driving events. The one forum I saw was full of kids.

Thats interesting and not what I would have thought.
I was actually looking for a car that my father and I can both enjoy at the track and if we dented a fender, we wouldnt cry. The miata doesnt seem exciting to us so I was trying to think of what car would make sense to get. We would probably leave it mostly stock except for harnesses, seat and r-compound tires. We have a budget for a used car of about 20K (My brother wholesales cars, so its easy for us to get them used).
I'm currently running a z06 and absolutely love it at the track but if I went off track it would be a very bad day for me! The vette seems fairly economic, rotors are $120/set, excellent pads: $300/set.. the only bad part is tires which are about $280 each. There is no need to really do much else to the vette, beyond safety and fluids.
So, does anyone have any ideas for a mid to high horsepower rear or awd car that would be nice at the track for $20K?

Rustangs?
The STi is a retarded amount of fun on the track, even stock. However, I wouldn't buy one used unless I knew the previous owner. Too many retards buy it, mod the ever-loving crap out of it so they can go fast in a straight line, blow stuff up, then get rid of it.
And then there are others who track it for 2 years and things fall apart and they get another one....

Im running a used STi this year. Only in season expenses have been brakes, tires, oil, and oh yeah... GAS. #-o
The STi has been wads of fun to drive rain or shine! The only gripes would be (in a nutshell) the car will eat through brakes without proper cooling, it will eat through tires without proper camber and will chug gas faster than you ever proclaimed you could chug beer. Other than that you get a bonus winter car!
If you're willing to spend a tad more, check these out

NASIOC is good for research if you know where to look, but there isn't actually all that much in terms of race-proven results. Maybe 20 or so guys ACTUALLY track this car seriously that I know of.
I'm selling a 2004 WRX thats been treated well, that I consider race prepped if you're interested. Its not an STI (but it will be one day).

If you want to make a dedicated track car, on the under $20k budget, buy/build a factory five racing Cobra and go full donor route.
If you want something a bit different that'll scare all the guys in WRX's, find a B16 swapped into a CRX, then fullly strip it, cage it and run in P. I've got my mighty 90hp CRX that's all lightness and have ridden in that other red newer CRX with the VTEC B16 that's otherwise fairly mild. Put that engine into a lighter setup and it would absolutely scream.
Plenty of kids do the swap, run out of interest or money and sell them cheap. I'm trying to buy one right now for well under $1k.
