2006 Car classification proposal
Now that it's getting to be rules time, does anyone know what the status of the car classification proposal that I submitted last December is, and the likelyhood that it will or won't go through? I know Chris Aylward had been doing some further work on it, but he may be a bit preocupied at the moment.

Kevin,

I was at the last board meeting and the subject briefly came up. The thought was that it was already getting late in the year for getting the major overhaul to go through. However I'd imagine it's not too late if there's enough discussion about it, and if someone was at the meetings to champion the cause.

Is it possible to post the proposed changes here? Or now that we have people who can update the main site, maybe put it there?
Re: 2006 Car classification proposal
The proposal was submitted in Dec 2004 for the 2006 season. That should have been enough time.

Basically, it's a rearrangement of the SS classes to be a better reflection of the cars that are showing up rather than what showed up 10+ years ago. The other thing this allowed was to give all the "tuner" cars that start out in ST a home in SS. The names of all the classes were kept the same to allow a carryover of all the track records, as all the new classes with the exception of SSU would be faster than the old ones. All wording referencing SCCA SS classes was eliminated. The net result was Most of SSB was combined with SSC, Most of SSA went into SSB, Some of SSGT went into SSA, and the fast SSGT and slow SSU cars were put into SSGT. Further differentiation of specific models with long production history (Porsche 911, Mustang, Corvette, etc.) were better divided up and specified than they are now.

Rule overhaul- too late?
Kevin,
There has been absolutely no discussion by the membership or Board over the last year of which I am aware and no one presented it at the last Board meeting. The feeling of the BOD was that a major revamp needs lengthy discussion by the membership and the full support of the rules chairman who must do a lot of work in the month remaining.

Who is the rules chairman?

I gave this to Chris Aylward (Chief Steward) in Feb or March, and he said that he was doing research on HP, weight, and such as requested by the BOD. I wish I had known that this had stalled out earlier, I would have resubmitted it sooner. I'll submit the proposal again through the normal channels.

Having a total of 10 SSC cars and about 15 ST4 cars over the last 3 years, with many of the ST4 cars being competitive with ST3 times witholut modification for another year seems like a waste of a class to me.

Ahhh...but while that may have been true in previous years, this year is quite different. The amount of ST3 drivers has increased substantially, and so has their skill. The small but competitive group in ST4, while posting very close and consistant times amoung the class, have been seconds behind the ST3 top finishers at most events this year.

With the current ST update/backdate rules, all Miatas can be prepared the same - with the exception of the engine. The ~20hp/tq variance between 1.6 (ST4) and 1.8 (ST3) engines is very real. In an effort to even the playing field, Spec Miata allows 1.6 cars to run several hundred pounds lighter and requires 1.8 cars to run restrictor plates. While COM's rule book states that the competitiveness of a particular car in a particular class is not gauranteed, I think it would be a step backward to consolidate these classes.

Kevin, I read your proposal last year and if I recall correctly, I agreed with most of it. Perhaps you could post the proposal here? That said, if classes are to be combined, than I would suggest either a brodening of the ST rules or an adoption of a new class which would be placed between ST and SP. Given the current rules, we move from a class where no engine modifications are allowed (and some would argue that this would even even include the airbox) to a class where any engine is allowed provided that it has the same amount of cylanders as the one it replaces. The rules have not kept up with current times where air intakes, aftermarket flywheels & clutches, ECUs, (and even things like cams and engine swaps), are commonly installed in "enthusiasts'" daily-driven vehicles.

But that is just my $0.02

The fastest cars that show up regularly in ST3, the 1999+ Mazda Miata and the Nissan Sentra SE-R, remained in SSB in my proposal.
...and the weight, and the rear differential. The 1.6L cars are 75-100 lbs less, have a better final drive ratio. If by "several hundred lbs difference" you mean 75 lbs, I agree with you. This weight difference is reflective of the cars in ST trim as well. The difference in Spec Miata with and without the restrictor is not nearly as much as you think, it's maybe 5 HP. IMO, with my proposal, the worst Miatas in ST trim would be the 96-97's because of the OBDII software.

I'll post my original proposal later tonight, when I get home and send it as a rules proposal.

Re: rules blues
For SM, the 1.6 cars are 2300 pounds, and for 1.8 cars they are 2400 pounds (I think that just got changed so the 1.8 cars are 2350). For SSM, the 1.6 cars are 2275 and the 1.8 cars are 2430. Also in SM the 1.6 cars are allowed a cone-style air filter instead of an airbox and the 1.8 cars are not. The restrictor plate in a 96-97 takes away about 8hp. It could be that the 94-95 restrictor only takes 5hp, it has a larger opening.
just to clarify...
By this year's results, the fastest Miatas that show up regularly in ST3 are 94-97 cars. Of course, we all know the Sentra guy :D too, and those Neons are looming, as are the M2 Miatas...!
To answer some questions:
Miata Differentials:
90-93 Miata (1.6L) 5-speed, 4.30
94-97 Miata (1.8L) 5-speed, 4.10
99-05 Miata (1.8L) 5-speed, 4.30
5-speed transmissions are all the same.
That said, ST rules allow updating & backdating of differentials.
2005 COMSCC Rule Book, Section X.7.F states:
Updating and backdating of differentials is allowed within the same manufacturer. Any aftermarket limited-slip differential may be used provided ratios are among those available on OEM differentials. WELDED OR LOCKING DIFFERENTIALS ARE PROHIBITED.
By several hundred pounds, I mean 'several hundred pounds', or perhaps 'upto 200 pounds' is more accurate. Per current Spec rules (don't know where you are getting the 75 pounds from):
1990 - 1993 Mazda Miata 1600cc at 2300 pounds
1994 - 1997 Mazda Miata 1800cc at 2400 pounds
1999 - 2005 Mazda Miata 1800cc at 2500 pounds
For what it is worth, my 1.6 Miata in ST trim, with me in it and 3/4 tank of gas, weighs in at 2498 pounds (Spec Miata weight rules include the weight of the driver).
As for the 96-97 ODB II cars, those engines have slightly higher compression ratios (9.0:1 as opposed to the previous 8.8:1 of 94-95 cars), and the ODB II software, with the additional O2 sensor post cat, allows the engine to run a bit leaner. The result? More horsepower.
90-93 are rated at 116hp, 100 ft-lb torque
94-95 are rated at 128hp, 110 ft-lb torque
96-97 are rated at 133hp, 114 ft-lb torque
99-05 are rated to 142hp, 125 ft-lb torque
Spec Miata restrictors are required as follows (note the difference between 94-95 cars and 96-97 cars):
1990 - 1993 - none
1994 - 1995 47mm restrictor
1996 - 1997 45mm restrictor
1999 - 2005 41mm restrictor
All 1.8 Miatas must retain stock airbox, 1.6 Miatas may substitute airbox for cone filter.
Given their better breathing ability, 1.8 engines respond a little better to the modifications allowed in ST than the 1.6's do. Peak and manufacturer ratings don't tell the whole story - you need to look at a dyno plot and observe the 'area under the curve' to appreciate the difference. I have.
I own a '95 1.8 Miata and a '93 1.6 Miata. The difference is not negligible.
But I digress. There are several other cars in SSB, SSC, ST4, & ST3, not just Miatas. Moreover, the point of this post is to follow up my observations above with fact - since they were questioned. I do not mean to go of topic or detract from the original point of this thread, but when up to 50% of the cars that show up to an event are Miatas, it is clear that a large group of members may have an interest in these proposed rule changes.
Kevin, thanks for the work you put into your proposal. Remember thinking that it must have taken some time to put together. In any event, I look forward to reading it again!

Re: just to clarify...
Spec Miata falls into SPC, primarily because of gutted interiors I believe. ST allows a lot more mods than Spec Miata, but the COM car classification structure does not accommodate this cross-over car/class.

IMO, I believe Kevin is right about revamping the rules based on "what is showing up now, not 10 years ago" and in that spirit I humbly suggest another look at current car counts and how well the current car classification scheme accommodates what is showing up now. Perhaps Miatas and suburus need their own class

Re: just to clarify...
I have the breakdown by make, model and class of every car that competed in COM Time Trials during the 2003 and 2004 seasons, and that is what the class structure was based on.

Yes, it does make the 1.6L Miatas less competitve, but of every car that runs regularly in COM, that was the car that was made the most significantly less competitive.

A Spec Miata with front interior and a passenger's seat or Petty bar is legal for ST in COM. As a side note, leaving the interior in the car except for the passenger's seat is allowed in Spec Miata. The way the SM rules are worded, a racing seat for the passenger's side could be installed and classified as ballast if installed according to the ballsat rules.
