MG Roll Bar

Post by Albert » Wed Apr 30, 2014 4:57 pm

Hi,

I am setting up my current car, a 1978 MGB Roadster to hopefully run with COM again. I say again because I was fairly active in the club a number of years ago between 1985-1991. I was a perpetual back marker for several years with an X 1/9 but then I bought an SSC Honda Civic which had been properly set up and run in SCCA and I started getting competitive. In 1990 I had my best season, finishing second for all but one event which I came in first at Bridgehampton; leading to my best year, second in class for the season and getting the RST Most Improved Driver Award.

So, I didn't really mean to go on and on about me! Just had such a great several years running with you folks that just prefacing my remarks for a couple of questions has got me thinking about the good ol' days.

My question: Is there anyone that is running and MGB in the club these days? I need to talk with some one who is or some one who is knowledgeable in the whole area of roll bars, etc. I have read the rules and car requirements a few times but still need to chat a bit with some one in the know.

My main question is about clearing the bar with the factory soft top and how that factors into needing to clear the driver's helmet by two inches. Obviously I don't plan to run with the soft top deployed but I want to be able to use the car on the street as well and both the soft and factory hard tops factor into the question. I have seen some historic racers running the factory hard top with bars installed, so somewhere there is an answer…I hope.

If my question resonates with anyone I'd love to listen to what you have to say.

Thanks,

Albert

a big part of my business is building roll bars and cages .
as for MGB's yes I have worked on many along with other soft top cars .
my number is 2034071708 Dave . facebook look up DKB it Hamden ct .
the down side is if you don't clear the broom stick test with a roll bar you have to drop the seat .
for me to do this with my Miata I had to remove the welded seat brackets on the floor and bolt the spec Miata seats right to the floor .
how ever the MGB's don't have welded seat brackets so cutting the seat foam or cutting the seat frame may have to be done ? that's if your not going to use the stock seats . if your going to use a racing seat and depending on how tall you are you may have to go another route .
