have any one ever taken there lap times in a miata with the top up and the top down to see if there is any difference between then .
i would not think there is any ?

google is your friend.
From what I recall there is a difference, airflow is more turbluent with the top down, so lap times are slower.
So you can leave your top down essenstially and use that as an excuse.

i did google it and got some different answers .
i'm looking for some one how really did it them selfs to see .
i would think at a track like nhms that no you would not see a change in lap times but at a track like say the glen you could ?

Top up has always been slower in my Miata...mainly because the track would be wet...

IIRC at the Glen the top up was worth 5MPH on the back straight. The hard top is a bit better than the raised soft top. I might be off a bit as it was a few years ago when I ran a soft top.
