NHMS track fuel

Post by breakaway500 » Sun Aug 12, 2012 7:14 am

Does anyone know if the pump gas available at the track is 100% petroleum (no ethanol content) and is no-lead? I have emailed and phoned, but no response. Thanks.

The 98 octane is unleaded, not sure about ethanol content. They have some super high octane stuff in cans that is leaded (110 I think).

Thanks Chris. I knew the octane was up there. I'm looking for 100% gasoline with no ethanol and no lead.
I can buy VP race fuel semi-locally,but figured if I am going to NHMS, I would just buy some race gas there...IF it has no ethanol or lead(lead=bad for oxygen sensors) I am finding todays 10% ethanol pump gas doesn't agree with some of my stuff after a few months of storage. At least good ole 100% gasoline would store a year before it stratified...and longer if treated. I'm finding todays oxygenated pump fuel (using ethanol) can barely make it a month or two max without getting cloudy (having absorbed water) and is starting to cause corrosion issues.. Now they are talking about bumping the amount of ethanol allowed in pump gas up to 15%!

Hi Mark, they have both VP and Sunoco available in 5 gallon cans, both leaded and unleaded plus a couple of differentoctane ratings . I think the price varied from $69 to $89 per 5gal. can. I don't know what they have in the pumps

Hey Dan! Good to hear they have it also available in 5 gal pails. That will save me from buying a few extra gas containers. Some exciting racing at the Glen today! (Hope they get all that oil cleaned up by next weekend.. )

I'm totally with you on the ethanol issue, I try not to leave pump gas cans sitting around too long.

The unleaded stuff in cans was 100 octane or thereabouts. The stuff in the pumps was 98 octane Sunoco so I looked it up, I'm going to make the assumption it is 260 GTX and not Green E15 as there was no ethanol label on the pump that I can remember. The 100 octane fuel Sunoco sells does contain ethanol according to this page:

" Sunoco® 260 GTX™ is an unleaded racing fuel that contains no oxygenates and no metallic additives. It does have additives to enhance shelf life and engine cleanliness. However, as with any gasoline, it should be stored in opaque, tightly sealed containers where the temperature is stable. Handled under such conditions, the shelf life of 260 GTX is in excess of 2 years."

That's the stuff I'm looking for. :D :sunny:

I remember the good ole days when you could buy it right at the pump, although it did have lead.. 8)
I am seeing a LOT of fuel system related failures coming in my shop since the use of ethanol in gasoline. If they bump it up to 15%,I'll have to hire a helper!

perhaps the price of corn (and food) will make the people who forced this stuff on us start to realize that is was a bad idea.

^ If only...all the higher prices of corn will do is make "the people who forced this stuff on us" to raise the rent due..
Ethanol is a decent alternative fuel for engines tuned and designed to run on it (although I don't personally believe in any alternatives being govt. subsidized, especially the corn/ethanol industry) However, ethanol raises hell with gasoline designed fuel systems, especially when allowed to sit.

A sealed 5 gallon pail of Sunoco GTX 260 was $65 earlier this year at NHMS.

As others said, the pumps are full of 98 but NHMS also has a variety of sealed 5-gallon containers of various brands and varieties, including a few Sunoco and VP offerings.

Sunoco provides a good amount of information about their race fuels here: http://www.racegas.com/fuel/compare
I believe NHMS had at least a couple of the unleaded varieties.

So does VP: http://www.vpracingfuels.com/page469663.html
I believe NHMS had C12, and another choice or two as well.
