Race Car Insurance

Post by Dtangard » Mon Apr 30, 2012 5:18 pm

I plan to take my car off the road and dedicate it to track events. I am interested in carrying liability and theft insurance on the track (maybe even collision). Do any of you guys carry insurance on your dedicated track cars? If so, what agency do you use?

I have my car covered for fire and theft. It costs about $100/yr. I just have it insured with my regular insurance agent/underwriter with the other policies for my vehicles. I don't know if you are able to insure a car for collision without a RMV registration.

I have "paddock insurance" that covers trailer and contents on the road and in th paddock. Not on track. I think I have it with Hagerty but I am on road until tmrw.

I'm definitely interested in paddock insurance. My current insurance agency would only insure the car if it was locked and in the garage...pointless

If you were to get in an accident on the track and hurt another person, can that person come after you and sue you or does the waiver we sign at the track cover them from doing that?

Not to doubt the intelligence of members of this forum, but I believe the LEGAL ramifications would better be left to a LEGAL professional for advice.

For Insurance I use Heacock Classic, STP insurance (storage, transport, paddock) so it's covered if anything happens while stored in my garage and winter storage, while it's on the trailer and in the paddock. Theft, fire, collision are all covered pretty much as long as the car is not running. Agreed value policy so you pick the value you want for the car. One issue is that it has to be in a locked garage except the night before transport to a track or while at the track.

I just called Heacock Classic for a policy for my 2 race cars and the total policy came out not that bad and very affordable. This is something I think I'm going to do since my race cars spend way more time in the garage than anywhere else.

So, what if anything is covered if your track car is towed to a shop for work, and left outside?

I'm not sure what the coverage when it's at a shop, I haven't really looked into that part of it. I could probably add the shop location as an alternate garage location without any issues but they would need to keep it inside.

Good info. I'm still a little concerned about liability though.
