location of rear seatbelt attach points and other questions

Post by n1gzd » Fri Jul 08, 2011 6:42 am

Hi,

The guy who is building the roll over protection for my MG midget is following the SCCA regulations that I found on the SVRA web site (they refer to those rather than creating their own). I have observed that lots of organizations do the same.

However, I have not found any regulations for seat belt attach points.
The guy who is fabricating this wants to put these attach points two inches below the top of my shoulder and right behind me. He says that for NSRA drag racing they require it to be between 0 and 4 inches lower than the top of the shoulder. Also since he wants to co-locate the attachment of the back of the seat (to the rollcage) in the same place the seat belt attach point will be very close to the seat. He says that for movie stunt driving they require the seat belt attach points to be on the floor (way below the shoulders). I told him that I thought that I thought that I had heard that exactly shoulder height was the best (not lower or higher).

Here are some questions:

Are there any published specications for how the rear seat belt attachpoints should be constructed that I can look at?
Is 2 inches below the top of the shoulder ok?
Does it matter how far behind the seat the attachpoint is?

thanks,
Rebecca

This G-Force harness install guide is very useful.. http://www.gforce.com/pdf/Harness_Install_Info.pdf

How did you make out with the Saab?

What Marks says is good but,

Most any race organization will have some reference to the correct position ( it is there it just may be burried or hard to find ):

NASA, has class specific regs & a general CCR
SCCA, is about the same
Vintage & Porsche (PCA) & BMW will all have printed docs' as reference

Most all the above tie back in some way to the SCCA CCR's & it will be in there to a some degree, it may just refer to the harness install instructions or it may require a hans or other device or it may spell out a portion of the install ( say the bar position w/in the cage, which tubes it can be installed too, the number of bends, requirements for tabs to locate the harness on the bar itself limiting side to side movement, etc).

Reminder .... Harness install guides are good, but most "racing" orgs. these days require a Hans or other device, these will also carry specific harness install angles that should be referenced .... FYI, I changed all mine over the winter to ensure I meet both Hans & NASA regs.

thanks for the tips. this supports the theory that two inches below my shoulders is too low. We are going to aim for 0 deg. I will show him that document ( and any others that I can find). My harness did not come with instructions. SVRA does not referr to any but you sent me good suggestions. SVRA requires head and nect restraint device. I chose safety solutions instead of HANS (both meet the same standard that is required for vintage racing) because I thought it is more comfortable. Anyway, I need to do more research asap. thanks for setting me in the right direction.

Regarding my saab.

it is fixed. new front inner CV joint, and right rear wheel bearing (was not serious but did it at the same time). I also ordered another set of tires (I think that I am close to needing them).

I had a heck of a time replacing an axle and wheel bearing on a old Ford Taurus, hope the Saab was a little easier.

Hey, did you get any photo's online yet? Have been itching to see some.

I have not posted my photos yet because I have been at the National Buick Convention all week with my 1950 Buick Super Riviera (not at home where I do my computer work). I will post them this weekend. Sorry for the delay.
