Driving to Mosport

Post by peterfontana » Sat Feb 12, 2011 10:31 am

I'm looking for the inside info on the best line - from Wrentham MA to Mosport. googlemaps says I-90W to Utica then strike north on NY-12, visiting Boonville, Lowville, Copenhagen and other lovely bergs. After a brief jog on I-81 and crossing at Hill Island, its ON-401W.

Is this the good way? How's 12 through there? Is 401 a full-up "interstate"?

the best line is a late apex.

12 is scenic with lovely wind farms but slow. You might want to stay with the Interstate especially if towing. 401 is as good as highways get in Canada. The best exit is rt 35/115 toward Clarington, not through downtown Bowmanville.

the 401 is a big highway, but very congested and full of trucks - probably my least favorite autoroute on the country :(

I take I-90 to Syracuse, NY - 481N toward Oswego - 81N to the Canadian border. 12N has a state trooper barracks on the only portion of the road you can pass on (they introduced me to the local justice at his house one Saturday several years ago) and they never seem to stop paving it. 81 is longer, but faster if you are moving quickly.

12 is scenic...In villages,it's slow. :D The wind farm along the ridge, is a unique sight....Monsters! If you miss them on 12, I believe there are a few more up on 81, close to the lake. A single one of their 3 blades has to be 3-400 feet in length, and the turbines have to be >450ft. off the ground. Hundreds of the beasts,an army...spaced out over about 3-4 miles . They were interesting to see..along with the small village farm settings, and the old abandoned sections of the boat canals and locks....and that real genuine full scale..military surplus Apache Helicopter on the front lawn of a VFW Post...and the "Tin" man on the porch of the house in one town. It was a good break from the highway pace for me...and entertaining! 401 is a necessary evil.. :D :sunny:

The COM web site has the best directions, do NOT get off the highway to take a shorter route unless you enjoy "scenic" slow roads.

The 115/35N exit (Clarington) is the fastest way to get to the track - it totally avoids Bowmanville and in-town traffic.

If you want to stay in a nicer area with a mall, restaurants, etc, try Oshawa. Durham College has a conference center with suites at a good rate (more info), the parking lots are big and good for trailers and the route from there to the track is easy and fast - no traffic (map info). There is also a Canadian Tire place nearby that will mount Hoosiers.

Sounds like I'm alone here but I like RT-12. I've never hit any major traffic on it, it breaks up the monotony of the trip and will save 30-40 minutes. There's a nice lodge on the route that's about 4.5 hours from the track. It's the perfect place to stop on the way home if you hit the road right after the 2nd track day. The next morning it's only about 5 hours from there back to Boston.

Your not alone Mick. I like the Rt.12 route too. I don't think it takes any longer than staying on the highway plus it is very scenic and a more relaxed drive with my heavy trailer (12,000#) I have not hit any traffic and yes you do hit some construction but it is usually short and passed by quickly. Most of the time you are doing 55 mph and you just slow down for the small towns. After all you get to go through Denmark and Copenhagen plus other famous towns

I am seriously contemplating a route via Montreal or Ottawa this time ... stay mostly on the Canadian side. Been thru both crossing the International Bridge on 81 and done parts of route 12 ... Means more miles but steady cruising speed on the 401( the "T-Can", Trans-Canada Highway). Probably gas more expensive too on the CND side but it's worth a try. Last times there took me 10 hours + going that way.
Via Montreal I do in under 4 from NH and I know it's under 5 to Toronto so potentially can do under 9 hours.

I have family near Montreal, and I use the annual Tremblant trip to visit them. Since there is no Tremblant trip this year, I may consider the route through Montreal for Mosport.

I will be coming in from the Toronto side with my sweety in tow (figurativly) as she lives 1.5 hours West of Mosport. Remember the divorce? Final TODAY. BTW, you met my girlfriend last year at Mont Tremblant NOT the wife. Can't wait for Mosport. I will be looking for someone to tail for lines or a volenteer rider, Les??

The season is upon us! Lets run! :D
