Meeting on Climb To The Clouds at DSG Sat, 2/5/11
I know this isn't a COM event but it's a great event nonetheless and I know a few COM members might be into racing at this historic event. (it started in 1904)
Saturday the 5th of February Dent Sport Garage will be hosting a meeting on Climb To the Clouds 2011. Event director Paul Giblin will be making the trip from VT to speak with DSG friends and anyone interested in running in this Event. We will be hosting with some snacks and coffee starting at about 1pm with an open house. Paul will be here at 2 to share any information that potential competitors might need.
Interested parties are encouraged to enter soon online and at least begin the application process prior to the meeting.

The Pastrana ascent video on that link is..amazing! Talk about a pucker factor. Wow..
It's not what you drive, it's how you drive. "Lap times matter"

That's really amazing! You really have to put a lot of trust in the notes! I can see myself being part of the Darwin thinning saying "what?" at 100 mph in the fog

Pastrana's run was a little different than the format that the event will be using. Like most hillclimbs, the event will be only one person in the car, no navigator.

Fantastic! I need to go learn rally-speak.
I'm curious..., if 2011 marks the return of this event, then how did they acquire that footage in 2010? (I'm assuming it was shot in the summer or fall of 2010 since they were running a 2011 Impreza)

Charles King aka Butch told me the story at the last NHMS event. From what I remember, Red Bull worked out a deal where the road would be closed to the public, so Travis could make a "record climb" to the top. Butch himself was not totally impressed with Travis' run because claiming a record climb with no competition was just a marketing ploy, due to his statement that a hill climb has different conditions at each event.cfossum wrote:I'm curious..., if 2011 marks the return of this event, then how did they acquire that footage in 2010?

That is correct^
Frank Sprongl has the current record. Another aid that is unavailable to hillclimb participants is a co-driver. That came under fire also.

Whenever I say "what?" to my navigator, she says "You heard me." Then I say "If I heard you, I would not have said 'what?'" She usually says something like "You never listen to me."John F wrote:That's really amazing! You really have to put a lot of trust in the notes! I think this all might be too dangerous at speed on a mountain. That's probably why they go without the navigator.

It's going to be interesting to see how he does on ovals.

Alex ... is this going to be a real event too the top like is was years & years ago or is going to be the "half run" they have been puttiing on as a marketing tool the last few years .... Dad & I might be interested if it is going to be a real full run ???? Will also get in touch w/ Butch to see what he has to say about it !!!!! Thanks ... Pat
Re: Meeting on Climb To The Clouds at DSG Sat, 2/5/11
It will be a full course run. The only thing that would potentially cut the run to a short course is the weather. I'm not sure Butch is doing it. There is a good possibility that his car won't be legal for the event unless he revises his roll cage.
