Old Helmets

Post by dinoracer » Tue Dec 14, 2010 6:07 pm

I expect we're going to have a rash of people upgrading to SA 2005 or 2010 helmets this winter, meaning there will be a bunch of SA2000 helmets around ( including mine). Rather than chuck it in the trash, does anyone have a use for these? Maybe an Autocross club or something looking for loaners? Seems a shame to fill the trash can with them if they can be useful somewhere.

Maybe I'll send mine to Africa for the starving car racers there....

Tom,as a purveyor of helmets ---- THROW AWAY YOUR OLD HELMET :!:
After a few years, the crush liner inside your helmet loses it's shock absorbing properties and is unsafe compared to a new helmet. The oils from your hair (scalp in my case) and pollution in the air (ozone) cause this liner to harden rendering it ineffective. Many years ago, Bell helmet said you should replace your helmet every two years. Now most helmet makers recommend every 4-5 years because of newer materials and better liners to protect the crush materials from hair oils and pollution.

With all the autocross clubs i run in, the rules are the same as COM. SA2000 is out for autocrossers too.

However, i agree the helmets should be discarded, or recycled or something...

A large sculpture. Perhaps Jeff and Liz could design something.

Keep an extra one to wear while driving around town, sleeping, watching TV, etc. to help keep your mental focus through the off-season

Ok , trash bucket it goes. Just trying to offset the damage to the planet my over-consumption of gas and rubber causes.

So we ideated on this.

We think we should do a participation art project.

Paint the helmets brown, then get COM drivers on stage with all our scrap tires as drum kit - Troy can contribute here - and we become the "brown mark group".

Who knows, we could apply for a club-wide grant program and tour to race track cities....

Performance art.....sort of like Blue Man Group. We'll have to have auditions to see who has rythm.. There probably aren't many. LOL..

I do happen to know a very good bass player amongst us.

Does he know the frequency of the brown note? :D That's all I could think of with the title of "the brown mark group"

I give mine to snowmobiler friends. Before the helmet, they rode around with a hat and goggles.
