Great event WGI
Great event WGI
Thanks for hosting another excellent event. Getting to the Glen is not always easy , but it is always rewarding.
I had fun and challenged myself quite a bit in my new car.
110 hp vs. 300hp is really not the same thing on this track.
I will be back in 2011- for sure!

Hey Mick,
Here's the video from Wednesday's open track session when I was following you:
Great event. I've got a lot of zip ties to cut off and replace with real parts someday.

Nice vid. I took a ride with Mick earlier in the event and I'm always surprised at how good that car is. I'm sure the driver has a little to do with it as well.
Awesome event. WGI was my least favorite track going into this event, and now......well...it is still my least favorite, but I do like it a lot more.

Absolutely it was a great event. Well run, great weather and good people. Could have used a few less black flags in Run group 1, but still beat the hell out of working! First time there and I'll go back.

Confusing choice of words. I should have said "I turned my fastest lap..."naschmitz wrote:Where did you post your fast lap?

Re: Great event WGI
My appologies for 2 of the group 1 black flags. The one on day 1 was actually group 0. Day 2 first session- I got the meatball in the soul of the boot and decided to drive it in instead of stopping on track and killing the session ( I was dripping a little oil on the header, but not much was making it to the ground unless the car sat for 20 minutes). As I approached turn 9 I got the idea of going up the Nascar shoot behind the flag station and behind the gaurd rail, wait out the session and drive in at the end. I even gave the corner worker a sign that I was still running. The car was in a completely safe spot. The corner worker, as it tuns out, was new and thought it best to call for the black flag. I was furious and had a good talk with Sam and the track Chief of Control when I got in. The track admitted a mistake- but my worst-case scenario of ruining a run-group occurred. I decided not to risk that again and packed it up- even though the car was capable of running 3-4 laps at a time with no problems. Thanks to Mark and Bill for the offer to run in a last rungroup for the timetrial. I had nothing at stake for points and really didn't want to cost others track time. On a positive note- it was fantastic HP making weather and, as usual, a very well run event by all the COM volunteers.

Here is a video of me following Greg Loupis through traffic. This was the first morning practice on day 2. This spin out was the scariest close call I have ever had. Turn 5 from that point on scared the $hit out of me.

Very nice save Nick. You didn't give up on it. That was the very first thing my very first instructor told me when he got into my car. "Drive the car until it stops, no matter what direction you are facing, do not give up." I didn't understand then, and it took me awhile to figure out what he meant.
Your vid is a perfect example of this.

I really thought that was it for my car. When I was sliding through the grass it seemed like forever and I kept praying that no car hit me and that I would somehow get back on the pavement to stop. This spin flat spotted my tires. Good thing I was going to get rid of them after this event.

Re: Great event WGI
Nick,
That was quite a spin. I "walked"/drove the track after the track closed on day 1, and stopped the truck and got out at the exit of 5. The curbing there has huge rumble strips cut into it, and the strips retain water. I don't know when it last rained at WGI, but I was surprised that the strips were still full of water. Kind of like huge ice trays. I stepped in one and it soaked my sneaker. The combination of those deep rumble strips, glossy white paint, and the water, made for a very slick surface.
Nice job riding it out, and then going 2 feet in as soon as it actually spun. James (red GTO behind you) had a front-row seat, and likely backed off to give you room. Good call, James.
Also, nice line around T9.
