Miata Challenge

Post by WillM » Thu Jan 07, 2010 12:37 pm

Any interest in running a version of the Miata Challenge at COM events?

The MC was started on the west coast a couple of seasons ago and has since spread to a few different regions in the US. The west coast and Texas, as far as I can tell, are the two most active areas.

That said, for those that do not visit the typical Miata forums, the MC is a fairly open set of rules for time trial events. There are only 3 classes, and each are based on points. The points vary for different types of modifications, but these are some of my favorites:

Other:
Excessive Rice +1
Non male -1
Automatic Trans (Miata engine only) -1
Rental Miata/MX5 (with rental contract) -1

I haven't paid much attention to the MC until recently. Seems like this could be an extra level of competition and fun for the many Miatas that run with us. There are currently no time trial clubs in the Northeast that run the MC, so there is the possibility of a bit more exposure for COM, especially at our away events.

The MC would run concurrent with COM events. Other than handing in an "entry slip" and potentially having their Miatas checked for proper MC classification, MC participants would not have to do anything different at COM events. COM's official Time Trial results would be used as the MC competition results.

If there is interest, there would have to be a handful of volunteers interested in helping out at the event. Keep in mind that this is totally separate from COM rules and such. That said, the workload should be very minimal, and there is likely only need for a single MC volunteer at each event.

I would be wiling to help get this off the ground, but cannot commit much time to the effort, as my plate is already full...

The 2010 MC rules can be found here: http://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=360170

Excessive rice? Who determines that, and based on what, spoiler height and tailpipe diameter? Interesting about running concurrent with COM events. My MSM would accumulate a lot of penalty points..

I'm wondering how long it will be before "rice" is considered to be a politically insensitive term?

I'm already eating rice - and noodles - so that I can keep up with my wife's shopping bills  But God forbid I spend money on the Subaru :?

I could help, but I won't be at every Com event in 2010.

I think I could be a fair steward when inspecting cars.. "Hey guys, I just downloaded the latest revision of the rules, and it says that any drivers with the last name Martins, Andrade, Wasilko, Gammon, Guertin etc... get automatic ballast and/or points penalties. Drivers whose last name ends in "Z" may use forced induction in any class. Sorry guys...the rules are the rules.."

Will Corollas be allowed? They are essentially 4-door Miatas, similar weight, 1.6L 16V injected, except they have a proper roof, not a fold-up tent in the trunk... 8)

Won't you have one or two Miatas for competition this season? ;)

If not, sorry, sounds like you are looking for the "Corolla Challenge". ;)

I was thinking the same thing. Would it be necessary to be at all the events? I'm probably looking at about 4 events, maybe 5 if the budget allows it. I'm certainly willing to volunteer at the events I'm at. I think this sounds like a fun idea, though I haven't really given much thought to any potential downsides, if any.

I'm looking at all of the away events, and NHMS 1. I'm definitely not going to make NHMS 3 (I'll be at Calabogie), and I have potential conflicts for NHMS 2 and 4, but those are up in the air.

Will are there additional driver costs to any of this stuff? Is this just a separate tracking and posting of TT results?
