ST Taped or coated headers
What do you think of the following rule change:
X. STREET TOURING
6. Aftermarket headers may be used. Headers may be coated or taped. Muffler use is required, but type is unrestricted. Exhaust must exit behind rear wheels and outside the body. Exhaust tubing size is unrestricted. Catalytic converters must be used in cars originally
The heat from my headers is wreaking havoc under the hood. Aside from the higher underhood temps, I'm cooking wires. At Mosport, an emmissions hose from the headers melted the side of a valve cover causing oil to spill out on a certain hard left downhill turn.

even with my headers wrapped i melted the the lower part of the radiator fan assembly and completely melted/burnt the wiring for the fans. i cant imagine what it would have done if there was no wrap at all.
need parts for your trailer, welding repairs/fabrication (sorry cant do aluminum), tires mounted and balanced, feel free to email/pm me. i am located a little west of nashua. ted
Shawn , C4 Vettes are noted for high under hood temps stock. I think you will still have a problem with wrap, but I don't see a problem with allowing it as long as a pnahard bar is also allowed Craig Herrick crashed his Mustang 2 years ago at Mosport because the axle moves arround so much with out the panhard that it broke the control link. I have already replaced to control links that have torn out the bushings and bent the mounts. Luckily mine have not snapped apart yet .

Sounds like those Mustangs are just dangerous Dan. I'd stay away from them.
This is not really an underhood temp problem as it is a matter of protecting some of the components that come near the headers and emissions pipes. I've melted a throttle cable housing, burned some plug wire protective sleeves, and recently the valve cover.

Re: ST Taped or coated headers
What you are merely doing is tranfering the heat to another location so bear in mind on the type(s) of heat insulation you may need further down in the pipes.Shawn624 wrote:What do you think of the following rule change:

In SS I cannot do this because you are creating a "performance" effect by keeping things "cooler" in the engine compartment.
But using tapes will only transfer heat dissipation to somehwere else. So better get some protection under your seat

Another thing to consider. If you are using steel tube headers, wrapping them will dramatically reduce the life of the header. I knew people who would replace wrapped headers each season on their stockcars. Instead, you might want to make heat shields to protect the items that are vulnerable to heat.

Totally correct, Jono. I learned the hard way.jlwhorf wrote:Another thing to consider. If you are using steel tube headers, wrapping them will dramatically reduce the life of the header. Re: ST Taped or coated headers
I think something to the effect of "To properly divert exhuast heat, the use of heat shields, coatings, wrappers, etc is unrestricted from the exhaust header gasket on" works.Shawn624 wrote:What do you think of the following rule change:

It sounds like heat shields are the way to go where there is room to put them without simply making them heat conductors. So an effective rule would allow for heat shields, coating and wrap.mossaidis wrote:I think something to the effect of "To properly divert exhuast heat, the use of heat shields, coatings, wrappers, etc is unrestricted from the exhaust header gasket on" works.Shawn624 wrote:What do you think of the following rule change:

If the rule already reads that an 'aftermarket' product can be used, why do you need a rule change to allow it to be coated or wrapped? Some headers can be purchased w/ coatings. "Aftermarket" does not specify how many hands are involved in its production/ preparation prior to installation, it just offers something other than OE to be used. Sounds unlimited to me.

Why? Because these are the ST rulesMMiskoe wrote:If the rule already reads that an 'aftermarket' product can be used, why do you need a rule change to allow it to be coated or wrapped?
