Unexpected expense from travelling to Canada

Post by breakaway500 » Sat Aug 16, 2008 10:24 am

Holy crap..I just got my Verizon cell phone bill and was charged an extra $60 for roaming.Half the calls did not even go through and most were dissconnects. What a ripoff. When I called I was told I should have reported the problem when it occured. Huh? At .69cents/minute I am going to call and report my cell phone service sucks. On a phone that doesn't work.
The kind lady said they could issue me a credit of $19 for all the less than 1 minute calls.

It's not really a big money deal, but it sure is irritating to pay for something I hardly ever use,and then have to pay even more for using it.

I don't use my phone much when home, primarily because I don't go anywhere and secondly because there is no service out in the boonies where I live.

AT&T says that they have coverage in my home town. I suppose it would not hurt to try them for a month as they say if you don't like the service you can cancel and they will refund charges.

Maybe I'll just raise some carrier pigeons... 8)

Oh yeah, just be happy you were not a NEXTEL customer years ago. They hosed me time and again. If you travel worldwide a lot the best carrier IMHO is Cingular (and use a 4 band phone). Just my humble 2 Yen.

I have Cingular/AT&T. I do not think there is anything special about my plan, but I do not get any such roaming charge. If I travel abroad (such as Europe), per-minute goes to $1.69, but there are no other flat-rate fees.

Exactly. You can get reduced European rates (i think) depending on if you sign up for a specific additional plan. Like you, i had no additional plan and the phone simply worked in Europe, Asia, South America, Canada, etc. Yes the per minute was a bit high, yet no $60 for roaming.

OUCH, someone got hosed by Verizon, eh?

That happened to me with the iphone last year. Every 15 minutes it was checking my email and charging me a buck or two. THAT was expensive after 3 days. I complained to At&T and they removed most of the charges.

I can't wait to see the Verizon bill! I used my wife's cell phone because I got hosed $20 for a 2 minute collect call from a payphone near NHMS :x Doesn't sound like I'm saving anything.
