Cheap magnetic door numbers

Post by CP » Tue Feb 12, 2008 10:16 am

I'm looking to make my own magnetic numbers that can be easily removed from the car doors. I was planning to use numbers printed in a selected Word font, each about the size of a standard page. I'm looking for ideas on where to get the magnetic material to cut the numbers from, preferrably in white. Suggestions?

Long story short:

The craft store supply type of magnetic material is not a good choice.

Go to a local sign shop and ask to buy some raw material, which should be about 30-mil thick and have a holding strength of about 85-100 pounds per square foot.

Or, wait a couple of weeks and ask me the same question again. ;)

Or go to http://squierdesign.com/

Also, one of our cheaper members goes to the hardware store, buys a roll of Contact paper (for shelves) and cuts out his own (you could trace your Word fonts). Throw away after each event.

I got mine from www.rallydecals.com. One of them disappeared in the mudding incident at Lime Rock Park. I reordered non-magnetic decals and stuck them on my car, and they survived the Jihad Alley crash

or leave them on year round like I do.

I have them on my windows so I can make them disappear if I want. This came in handy once when an off-duty cop pulled up next to me after I might have been driving with a bit more spirit than he appreciated. He was checking out my numbers while waving his badge and radio - clearly calling ahead to his accomplices in the next town and saying "Watch for the black car with big red numbers on the side - you can't miss it." When he pulled off at the next intersection, I lowered the windows and drove right his buddies with impunity.
