Hey! If Nate catches ANYONE out of class, the fine is $100 million!
Amidst much confusion from news services worldwide, which originally reported that McLaren had been banned from the '07 and '08 Formula 1 championships, the verdict from today's World Motor Sport Council meeting finally came to light: the silver team has been excluded from the '07 constructor's championship but will be allowed to carry on racing, with Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso retaining their driver's season points.
The confusion was triggered because even though the FIA did recommend that McLaren be banned, the actual verdict is cast only after the WMSC's 26 members have deliberated and voted.
Hamilton thus continues to lead the championship with 92 points, three more than Alonso and 18 ahead of Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen with only four races still to be contested this season.
In addition, the WMSC also determined that McLaren's 2008 challenger will come under scrutiny before being raced to ensure it doesn't benefit from any intellectual property belonging to Ferrari.
Finally, the Woking, UK-based outfit will have to pay a staggering $100m fine.

Re: McLarenGate
Yeah, quite a controversy though they say the fine may be reduced to 'only' $50M. This also means the McLaren team will have the worst pit area for 2008 season and other situations like lack of F1 shared funds at end of season. The repercussions are far reaching beyond just losing manufacturer points.
