Race fuel at NHIS is now unleaded and 98 octane (Nascar mandate). This is a problem with our SCCA car. I checked with the Glen and they have 100 octane unleaded and 112 leaded.

Haffner in Hudson, NH on Lowell Rd (for some it's kinda on the way to NHIS off Rte 3) has 110 octane. Can't remember if leaded or unleaded but I do remember it's less expensive than at NHIS.

110 will be leaded. No unleaded fuels available with that octane rating. VP109 is the closest and you won't find that in anything other than a 55 ga. drum.

Scott,

The Haffners on Rt125 Haverhill/PLaistow line (a mile north of exit 51B on 495) has 110 at the pump. The fuel is Sunoco purple sold under the name of CAM2.

Thanks Johnathan, I know the place. I'm just worried about the first SCCA race at NHIS in 2 weeks. The Gulf station down the street on 106 still has kerosene in his tank.

We use VP109 for our cars. We buy it from VP Maine and we have special ordered it from Reid's Machine in Whitman MA.

We like unleaded for environmental reasons and it can still do fine at 28+psi of boost.

Mr. Mike's Truck Stop is just a short detour off 93N for those coming from MA and points south. They also carry Sunoco 110 leaded aka CAM2.

There's a place in Elliot Maine where you can get drums of VP. I use the VP114 plus in my Champ car.

VP114 plus is only about $11.00 per gallon. :lol:

VP114 is leaded.
VP MS100 unleaded is $7 with alcohol. Greg uses it. I do too. They also have MS103

Ouch....that is kinda pricy. If you want to mix your own, you can get 100 octane unleaded for about $5.75 per gallon. Even less if you buy in bulk. Local Sherwin Williams store has the octane booster that you need. All you have to do create a mixture of 33.3333% Toluene and 66.6667% 93 Octane unleaded fuel and you have 100 octane for pretty cheap. I have done it and it works great.

Paid $4.21 a gallon for 100LL at my local airport. Add to that, airport/aviation gas and how it is stored is held to very strict guidelines. Would HATE to be the first few guys to pump the crap from a track in-ground tank after the winter and pay $7/gallon for the <cough> privilege <cough>.

You mean I can go to - for example - the local airport here in Nashua and get aviation fuel just like that?
Do you not need a pilot's licence or proof that you own a plane or belong to a air club?

Concerning avgas, I have been told that the octane ratings are calculated differently. It is calculated using the Research Octane method, which higher than the (R+M)/2 method used for automotive fuels.

Notes:
Toulene: Common ingredient in Octane Boosters in a can. 12-16 ounces will only raise octane 2-3 *points*, i.e. from 92 to 92.3. Often costs $3-5 for 12-16 ounces, when it can be purchased for less than $3/gal at chemical supply houses or paint stores.
Xylene: Similar to Toulene. 12-16 ounces will only raise octane 2-3 *points*, i.e. from 92 to 92.3. Usually mixed with Toulene and advertised as *race formula*.
Methyl-tertiary-butyl-ether (MTBE): Oxygenate. Very common in octane booster products. Has lower BTU content than toulene or xylene, but oxygenate effect makes the gasoline burn better and produce more energy.
Methanol or Ethanol: Methanol is wood alcohol. Ethanol is grain alcohol and found in Gasohol in 10% ratios. Both alcohols are mildly corrosive and will eat gas tank linings, rubber and aluminum if used in excessive ratios. Main ingredient in "Gas Dryers", combine with water.
Isopropyl Alcohol and Tertiary Butyl Alcohol: Similar to Methanol/Ethanol. Isopropyl Alcohol is simply rubbing alcohol.
Making your own
How to make your own octane booster (this is the basic formula of one of the popular octane booster products). To make eight 16 ounce bottles (128 oz = 1 gal):
100 oz of toulene for octane boost
25 oz of mineral spirits (cleaning agent)
3 oz of transmission fluid (lubricating agent)
This product is advertised as "octane booster with cleaning agent *and* lubricating agent!". Diesel fuel or kerosene can be substituted for mineral spirits and light turbine oil can be substituted for transmission fluid. Color can be added with petroleum dyes.

[Thanks a bazillion for that post. I'll only add one comment regarding using methanol. In a word, don't. It attacks zinc and magnesium very rapidly. Guess what is in carburators and other fuel system parts. I had this graphicly demonstrated to me one time. I was involved in racing chain saws (Oh no, not another one....) In the particular class, my saw ran on 100% methanol. Saws are typically made of a magnesium alloy. I knew I had to clear out the system after each run but one afternoon I forgot. By late evening when I remembered it, the gas tank had already corroded through. I left it to see what would happen and by morning practically the entire saw was a pile of white dust with steel parts interspersed. That included my one-of-a-kind highly ported cylinder I'd spent hours on. *sob*. I saw similar results running methanol in motorcycle engines, though never as bad. JGD]
