How often have you cracked your windshield?

Post by Mick » Wed Aug 22, 2007 1:59 pm

I got a small crack in my windshield at Tremblant that's starting to get worse, the glass will need to be replaced. This will be the 3rd time I've cracked my windshield in 3 seasons. $

Does this happen to anyone else, or am I just unlucky?

I change about 1 windshield every 1 1/2 years on my daily driving Jeep. The distance to work is only 15 miles (Highway) but somehow I seem to attract pebbles and stuff.
I think your problem is all those Miatas using all the track to try to catch to your times. And in the process they got off the track (a little) and you happened to be just behind it waiting for the point-bys on that Miata-train

I got a crack at WG this year, first one in 4 seasons, and that was from debris thrown up by another car. Can you tell if they're impact related or are they stress cracks from body flex? If it always happens in the same spot, I suspect the latter.

Hey! talk about body flex (and roll) I am king... and I have not ever (knock on wood) had to change my windshield. Must be German faulty construction :dontknow:

I usually go through about 1 a year, but never from an on track incident.

Usually rocks and such on the road, or from turning the defrost heat on full blast in the winter when its too cold out.

Definitely from rocks being kicked up.

Once I get a small fracture it quickly spreads. I think it's due to the fact that the windscreen is structurally bonded to the frame, and it doesn't help that my car is tightly sprung.

The first time it happened I was following Will M. through turn 5 at Tremblant. He dropped a wheel and it looked like someone threw a fist full of dirt and rocks at my car. I have it on video, I'll have to dig that one up.

You should have been faster with the point-by!
Ha, I wish!
...sorry dude.

PS - If we ever run North Oval at NHIS again, do not follow me to the exit of 10.

Giant Glass in Peabody has a copy of a newspaper article posted that showed the percent increase in glass claims since they repaved RT 95 north of 128. The average for all of the RT 95 border towns was up something like 800% Between Coleen and myself we average 1 windshield per year.
Never lost one on track yet though. Never will lose one in the Porsche unless you count helmet shields- that would be nasty.

When I put mt car on the trailer at the July event, no crack. When I got home and took car off trailer, big crack from top corner on driver side. No visible chips. Winshield guy said it was a stress crack. I did hit the transition at 3 pretty hard once

Everyone knows the glass is the strongest part on an Alpha
