Rain/Street tires
My rain/street tires are worn out. Does anybody have a suggestion for a tire that is great in the rain but can be used on the sreet (only about 200 miles a year) . I have 17" wheels that will take a 245 x17 and my Mustang is heavy 3700 # plus with out driver. I was using Pirelli P Zeros on 18" rims, they were ok but expensive.

Dan, if these are street only, I would recommend the Falken RT-615. At 220 tread wear, they are very sticky for a street tire. Also, they slice through standing water. I have about 30k miles on my first set and they are just now getting down to the wear bars. I use them as my rain event tire at Devens for autocross.

Use 17-inch rims on the Fcar and the Mich Pilot PS2 have been great for street and event track super wet downpour at LRP they had impressive grip. Another good thing about the Mich PS2 is that they don't tramline due to uneven road surfaces like the tread pattern found on the Kumho 712's (and ??Eagle DS-1??).
I can't comment on the other choices, but I think the Toyo RA-1s would be a good choice. Biggest problem will be that they will last for years, so you'll want to store them when not in use (and it sounds like they would just normally be on the car).
They won't be cheap. A quick innernet serch came up with the P-Zeros for $141, and the RA-1's at $178.

Also worth considering, Kumho Ecsta MX. I put some on my Mazda and just ran LRP with them last week in both dry and rain. They were pretty decent for a street/track tire. 225-45-17 at tire rack was $111 each with a $40 rebate on top of that for a purchase of 4.
Just don't run them with 80 pounds of air, like Raj did.

Raj are you trying to kill me The 17" wheels I got came from a wreck I bought for parts -- it had Nittos -- They are slippery , especially in the wet of course they are also baldYou could also try the Nitto NT01's.
The P Zeros I bought from Town Fair tire , they were expensive (about $361 each) I think I was had
Tom have you used the Toyos in the rain on your Mustang ? I need a set of tires that will BEAT Raj in the rain

Raj: You cant' use Nitto-01 in the street ... .. not designed for that.
Yokohama AR-32 are also a good bet but Surely Toyo will give you the flexibility of Rain/Street and Dry.
I use Pirelli in the Alfa for Street/Rain. I have a Yokohama set too and they are both awesome depending on the level of the rain.

The NT01 = the RA1. (Same compound.) I was looking at my RA1s today and they said "For Competition use only" on the sidewall. I don't think I would use them on the street.
My buddy just put BFG G-force TA KDs on his '00 Mustang and he loves them on the street. The weekend he put them on we did a track day in the rain and they stuck very well. Tire Rack's comparison they rated better than the Kuhmo MX for dry and slightly worse in the wet. Jason replaced his worn out MXs with the BFGs and he was amazed at how much quieter they were. They also followed road crown less.
I guess it's up to you to decide how much you're going to drive on the street with them.

That is a pretty good price for the GSD3's Can you tell me what they are in 315/35/17 as well. My RT 615's are ready to give up the ghost, and I was going to buy another set, but I'd try the GY's if the price is right.
Edit: just noticed you mention 245/45/17... I would need 275/40/17 for the front..

In past years, I have driven to and from every COM event on a set of full-tread RA-1 tires which were used at "rain" tires when I got there. I'd drive on the "rains" to and from the track, pulling a small trailer with the "dry" RA-1s (shaved). This included the away events, which tallied up thousands of miles in a season (and on the same set of full-tread RA-1 tires).Scooter70 wrote:Dan,

I never, ever had a single problem. In fact, the tires just refused to wear!
