Stock vs. stock, tuned vs. tuned, well-maintained vs. well-maintaind, poorly-maintained vs. poorly-maintained, rotaries are generally less, not more, reliable than piston engines.
I love rotaries for many of the reasons stated above. But "reliability" does not belong in the "pros" column!

1 rotary engine vs. 1000 piston engines. Take a middle of the road piston engine and compare that to the rotary, i don't see much of a difference. Sure some are design related, but the nut behind the wheel has something to do with it too.

Having witnessed Shawn's RX7 run on the dyno last week, I can attest to the sound! Wow!! The crew was diving for cover when that rotary edged past 8000rpm!

Smoothness. No piston engine can come close to the smoothness of a rotary engine. It spins like a top. There aren't any reciprocating parts, where as a piston motor is nearly all reciprocating (and vibrating) parts. Thats the one thing I love about the rotary and it has to be felt to really be appreciated.

I like the lightweight and the power for such a small displacement.
I, like Karl, also like it because it is different than a piston engine.
Also love the sound and almost electric type car acceleration.
If you go to a Grand Am race this year and hear the 3 rotor SpeedSource cars you can be blindfolded and know exactly when they come by,best sound i have heard on a track.
I only have my one rotary experience to go by but mine has been good to me,had my engine re built years ago,freed up the exhaust,big radiator and intercooler and kept boost stock.So far so good with my foot on the floor red line shifts every session.Good luck with the project.

Would any of you have a stock or close to stock dyno sheet in pdf format I could use? ...or even better...if you have the file in the dynojet run viewer format...I'll take that.
The technical portion of his project has a focus on the difference in the power band. I gave him one of my old Mustang sheets, which is a pretty typical stock V8 graph. The only rotary graphs he can find on the web so far are from cars that have been modified with loads of boost.

I have some dyno graphs and raw numbers on paper on my RX-7 from last week's dyno day at DSG. Let me know if you're still looking for them. I'll scan them and send them to you.
Pros and cons lists go on forever, but rotary engines come in some fun cars.

Shawn, can you give us any more info on your RX7? What was that 'mod' that gave you the added power at DSG?
Theres a nice looking Vintage Red '93 RX7 R1 on craigslist right now. I'm soooo tempted to go and look at it.

I got a couple dyno sheets from Tom Mak... Thanks so much for that, Tom. My nephew's project is to be presented this morning. I'm sure he'll score well on it.. I reviewed it last night and it is very comprehensive for a 7th grade level project. I think back to when I was in 7th grade, and we never did anything this cool.

I have an 87 RX-7 non-turbo so it's nothing like that 93. My dad had a 93 amoung a string of impressive sports cars and he still mentions from time to time that it was the best handling car he ever drove and he wishes he still had it. He mentioned a couple of days ago how nicely it settles in over 100 mph.
