The way that I read it, '63-82 are not classified. It says "Corvette (solid rear axle), C4 1984" under SSA, "Corvette C4 1985-91 except ZR1" for SSGT, and "Chevrolet Corvette 1991+ NOC" for SSU. The wording of the first one is unclear. Why not just change it to SSA: Corvette 1953-1984, SSGT: 1885-1991 (Except for ZR1), and SSU: 1992+ NOC. (Notice the inconsistency of 1991 being listed under both SSA and SSU. We had a '91 and it's definitely slower than the rest of the SSU cars, even though that's where I ran it at the time. Obviously, not every car can be competitive but C3<<C4<<C5. Each generation surpassed the previous one by a large margin.

For a corvette club, it almost looks like we don't know anything about them.
84 is the same as the 85
Why break at 91?
and the zr1 is nothing special anymore
what makes sense to me....
C1 (solid axle) 53-62 SSC
C2 63-67 SSB
C3 68-82 SSA
(no 83)
C4 84-96 SSGT
C5 and C6 97-07 SSU
not that anyone cares

Turtle,
1984 carried over the Cross Fire Injection from '82 while the 85 was the first year of Tuned Port Injection. '91 was the last year of the TPI before the LT1 came. I would imagine that these distinctions (however small at this point) have been in the rulebook since we were a Corvette club and they actually made a difference.
63-82 were pretty much the same chassis with only body changes. Not that anybody would try to run any of these cars stock and expect to be competitive. At this point, I think it's just you and me discussing it and my '70 isn't really legal for any COM class. (Although... would the LS1 swap be considered "updating" and therefore legal? Nah... nevermind)
See you at The Glen. I'll be in the dark gray GTO.

There are three of us who care. I'm not competing yet, but I will.
If the classification of the C3 is too confusing, sell the '70 LS1 to me
I really hope to make the journey to the Glen. To drive the car I built around there would be very rewarding.
Do they have all the snow plowed off there by mid-April?
My niece goes to Ithica college--maybe I can round up a co-ed pit crew!!

Just a reminder that the way the car classification rules work, they are fixed for the year- except for NEW, formerly omitted classifications. November is the only time to submit rules changes to the Board.

Anything's for sale for the right price. Watkins Glen is the reason the LS1 is between the fenders. The smallblock spun a rod bearing there in 2003.Stevie K. wrote: If the classification of the C3 is too confusing, sell the '70 LS1 to me
Hopefully we'll see you there.

Just a couple of clarifications:brucesallen wrote:Just a reminder that the way the car classification rules work, they are fixed for the year- except for NEW, formerly omitted classifications. November is the only time to submit rules changes to the Board.
Rules changes can be submitted at any time, but only serious,
safety-related rules changes are likely to be considered mid-season.
Car classifications are set in stone for the year once the first event
is run. A "new" car classification that is made "on the fly" at an event
could probably be appealed to the Board of Directors, but you would
have to be persuasive indeed to get a classification from the Stewards
changed.
