Hi,
I've got a 1969 Mustang with a somewhat non-stock 9" rearend - Daytona pumpkin, Torsen diff, etc - that I had a local guy set up with new gears, and after 8 track days and about 9000 street miles the mesh got sloppy and noisy (clunky). So I went to another guy and had it checked over. He said it was set up "wrong" originally so the gears were junk but everything else was fine, and he put new Richmond gears in - 3.50:1. That seemed to cure the slop but the now they whined a little on the highway - loudest at 73 mph under load. When I mentioned this to him he said they were "race" gears and said it was normal.
So about 2000 street miles and 2 track days later the whine a lot louder, still loudest at 73 mph under load.
Can someone recommend a trustworthy mechanic who can get me set up right this time?

Thanks for the plug, "Mark" but the rear end gear set up is a real science. It sounds like the pinion depth is not set up right. I've done my own 8.8 gears and had the whine. When I needed my Torsen T2R done I hired a Ford dealership tech- as a side job- to do it. They have a tool that sets the pinion depth with no measurements taken. No guessing or pullling it apart 3 times. Those crush sleeves are a b*tch.

You could try Mitchell Differentials in Shrewsbury, MA. I don't have any personall experience with them. However one of my friends has used them before and was very happy with the work.
