2004-2006 Pontiac GTO class?

Post by Scooter70 » Mon Jan 29, 2007 4:25 pm

I see that the new GTO hasn't been officially classed (at least it's not in the rule book). Has anybody run one in a COM time trial yet? If not, I'd like to suggest that it be placed in SSGT (and then ST1 & SPA). SCCA puts the GTO in T2 with the rest of the cars that COM puts in SSGT.

Tech Specs:
2004: LS1 - 350hp
2005&6: LS2 - 400hp
Weight: ~3760lbs
Tire: 245/45-17 (and that's about all that will fit to clear the strut)

Comments or questions? If someone has already run one and set precedence, let me know. I'll be coming to The Glen with mine in April. I have a few mods on the car that will bump it to ST, so that's really where my interests lay.

Thanks,
Matt

I just looked through the 2004-2006 event results to find that there has never been a GTO that participated in the time trials. I'll be the first. SSGT/ST1 sounds about right to me. All those in favor? I. Opposed?

(Am I just talking to myself here?)

Yes to what? That you agree with my car going in ST1 or that I'm just talking to myself? Or both? Wait.... I'm doing it again. :D

I would think the GTO would be in SSU along with the 1999 and up Mustang Cobra. The Mustangs are 320 h.p. to 390 h.p. depending on year. This compares to the GTO's 350 hp.to 400 h.p.. The weight is also very similar.
At the November 2005 Lime Rock event, there was a black GTO. I'm not sure what year or h.p. it was. I was behind it several times and it was quite fast but did not run the time trials and I'm not sure what class markings it had on the side.

Are you just saying that because you don't want me to run ST1 with you? Image

The capabilities of the cars in SSU are so varied. I've been on track with Z06s in my GTO and there's no comparison. The car is much closer to a Z28/SS Camaro albeit with 30-40 more hp and an IRS. Who is Chief Steward these days?

Actually Matt I believe under the new rules I will go to STGT with you. You see not all the Mustang Cobras in SSU-STGT are supercharged 390 h.p. models. Besides if I am still in ST1 the Subies will be there this year and there is no way either one of us can compete with them  I really do think with your power to weight and the type of car you would be in SSU/STGT

Unfortunately, the GTO question didn't get asked until after the 2007 rulebook was finalized. (Should be published soon, I trust!) The stewards discussed it and concluded that a stock GTO will be placed in SSGT.

See you in April!

Nate : The GTO in SSGT doesn't seem fair to the 1999-2001 Mustang Cobra (classed as SSU) drivers. The Cobra is 3600# and has only 320 h.p. while the GTO has up to 400 h.p. and weights only 100# more.
SSGT would put the GTO in with the Mustangs like the 1996 -1998 SVT cobra , mine weights 3720# on the NHIS scales with out driver and only has 305 hp and less torque the the SSA classed 2005 Mustang with 300 hp.
What was the one classed as that drove in Nov. 2005 ? :dontknow:

My info (http://www.internetautoguide.com/car-sp ... index.html) says the GTO has 350 hp, not 400.

I don't know how they compare on handling.

Nate: The early GTOs were 350 h.p. 5.7 lit. the later ones were 400 h.p. and 6 liter. besidess the 1999-2001 Mustang Cobra was only 320 h.p. 4.6 liter and Ford admitted that the 1999 was not actually 320 h.p. but less , They offered to modify customers cars to raise the horse power. So if you have the 320 h.p. Mustang in SSU why not the 350 h.p. GTO ?

As to handling -- Both the Mustang Cobra (1999 and up) and the GTO have IRS on the rear but are overweight , nose heavy, poor handling , pigs :-k I can say that because I drive one although mine has a solid rear axle. (pre 1999)
