A new comer's rules proposal #1

Post by mossaidis » Thu Oct 06, 2005 4:41 pm

NEW_RULE:
XI. STREET PREPARED subsection 1 & 2
(In brief) change class specs to more closely mirror suspension/engine/tranny mods listed under SCCA IT GCR rules or SCCA Street Prepared Solo rules. (specific GCR and Solo rules can be submitted upon your request)

XII. STREET MODIFIED
(in brief) rename the current Street Prepared rules under new name, "Street Modified" and list under new section number, XII.

XIII. Prepared (content of section remains the same as current COM rules, but could be renamed to XIII. Prepared/Modified)

OLD_RULE: See "XI. Street Prepared" section

MY COMMENTS: Though current COM SP rules are simple to follow and interupt and must incorporate a wide range of mods to make a field large enough to compete in, there is no competetive class for SCCA IT cars or SP Solo cars to race in. Second, allowing for both SCCA-like Imporved Touring/Street Prepared(Solo) cars and a new class, Street Modified, you can bridge the gap between less modified COM SP cars and ones with more mods.
The one major flaw to this proposal is that it adds more classes. IMO, and that of many in COM that I have spoken with, there are already too many classes.

As Kevin said, we're not looking to add more classes.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but IT / Solo 1 Street Prepared cars are free to run in COM Prepared class, right? Our P class requirements are pretty much run what you've got, the few things required (roll bar, window net)these cars probably already have.

The issue is whether they are competitive as compared to the other cars in the class. I think here we have to fall back on the notion that to win a particular class in any kind of racing, you have to build a car to the limits of the rules for that organization's class.

That makes it tough to build a car that's a front runner every where it goes. Sorry, but I don't see how COM has to accomodate SCCA rules. They should make their classes more like ours

IT Cars

This SCCA IT idea has been around for a lond time (10+ years). Although I have an IT car I do not see the need to have an additional class just to make another groups cars fit. Our P/SP classes have a limited amount of cars preped to the limits anyway. SPEC Miata's are no way close to the prep limit and seem to do pretty good in SPC.

Thanks everyone. This rule idea is certainly not new to the club. As a new comer, I didn't see anything posted on previous threads on it, so I decided to put in my two cents. Even if such a rule change were to be put into effect, I would stay in ST for $$ reason for at least two more years. I also knew that even I was on both sides of my own arguement.

I saw another post on the rules advice thread talking about allowing more engine mods to a ST car w/o making more classes. In essence, I am asking for something similiar, allow more mods w/o having to go all out and allowing spec from cars from other clubs, i.e. SCCA, may bring more memberships and participation.

Many have stated that even slightly modified SP cars are competing very well. Perhaps this IT/SP(Solo) for COM SP idea might be useful idea in the future. Thanks Again!

PS. the reason I didn't write a complete rule proposal cause most rules changes included class re-classifications, or changing two words about "roll bars". My suggestion included changing an entire section, so... I was treading lightly so to speak and didn't want to waste anyone's time, including my own.

re: engine mods in ST

ST has historically been a handling and brakes class. No engine mods allowed. You want to go inside the engine, that takes you up to SP. As an ST driver, I'm in agreement with the theme. Having said that, I run an underdrive pulley and a header just to stay competitive. But I would gladly take them off if the rules were to disallow them, rather than keep them on and move up to SP where I am not competitive yet (note that I am taking responsibilty and not blaming the car :) ).
