What tire and wheel size for miata track car?

Post by rousespointer » Mon Oct 28, 2019 9:31 pm

Picked up my third anniversary edition 1999 miata. This will be for track days only, so want the optimum wheel and tire sizes. What is a good choice for wheels? Fender lips have been slightly rolled already as it was used for drifting by previous owner. Maybe 15x8 and what tire sizes fit that?

Spec miata size is 15x7 (205/50/15), so there are lots of wheels out there in that size. You can also get cheap hoosiers (SM7) in that size.

There is a tradeoff between rolling resistance (straight line speed) and grip (corner speeds) that you should be aware of.

There are a lot of folks running 15x8 with nittos and they seem happy with them.

To be able to capitalize on the Spec Miata sizes is a huge cost saver, a lot of those teams get rid of their tires at 3 heat cycles.

X2 on the speed tradeoff as I noticed it at WGI.
