Upgraded myself out of COM :(
Hi Everyone,
Really miss the COM events and here are the basics. In 2005 did an event and all was good. Seemed to be in a classification nearly same spec cars as myself. Ya know, Porsche 944 and the like. All was happy.
In 2006 got bumped up all because i went with better anti-roll bars. DOH! Now the car is way outclasses by others as i was bumped up a classification. Color me honest as i follow rules and told the truth about the upgrade.
A few weeks ago i decided paying $350 for a new distributor cap was INSANE... and the car needs TWO of them!!! Forget that, so i removed the lackluster early 80's designed Italian dual box job for a basic Electromotive XDI (not the Tec3r, just the basic XDI). Can see now i stand about an equal chance of a snowball in that warm place than my car having an inkling in competing in COM.
Yes, it is my own fault and blame no one, but guess i felt the desire to at least let you guys know that i truly do miss attending COM events, but that now my car is pretty much worthless in regards to where she sits in relation to other cars. Am very happy to never having to ever again pay $700 for two distributor caps... and dare i mention the highway robbery $300+ for a set of original spec ignition wires that are no longer needed as can now use normal Taylor wires at $50 a set.
In my next COM life i want to drive a spec open wheel car. Thanks for listening and hope to see you guys at various events. Lastly, any chance in having COM look at my heap of metal and somehow placing me somewhere more sane in classification?

..almost cheaper to buy one of these than to do a tune up on your car.

Come on down
Steve, there is no rule that says you can't run your car for all but the last 3 laps. Track time, racing buddies, just no $5 trophy- not a bad formula.

Re: Come on down
Thanks everyone and yeah, think an open wheel spec car is my best bet. Might get something inexpensive like Prout's VanDiemen RF81 Formula Ford or some such. Sorry and all, no Miata as want to move off from saloon cars.
Nice one Mick Fortunately have avoided the dreaded broken cam belt situation (and the car has two of those, too. ARGH!). Ever see what a broken cam belt does to an interference engine? It aint pretty.
Well guys, reality hits me square in the head. Looks like i picked the wrong car for dedicated track fun, but damn she is fun to drive and sounds nice. Guess she'll be a nice grocery getter and beach vehicle in her second life.
Will try to make the Saturday of the October NHIS event just to hang out and see the action.

(Said in good humor my friend) What? No $5 trophy after spending $300 for a day on the track, $60 in oil, about $40 in brake pads and rotor wear... Come to think of it maybe i should toss the track time and just buy pretty trophiesoffcamber09 wrote:Steve, there is no rule that says you can't run your car for all but the last 3 laps. Amen, but the rules will now place me in something like tweaked M3 territory plus i'd need to have installed a custom roll cage as there is nothing 'off the shelf' for it.Subw00er wrote:run what ya brung!
Hmm, i wonder... what if i brought my 2005 4x4 Ford Ranger? That IS actually an interesting idea. Are trucks allowed?
Buy a miata $5-10K ready to go dependant on your build levels
One set of rotors will last a couple of years, maybe 2 sets of pads in a season if you drive really hard, 2 sets of tires in a season etc etc
having said that I will miss seeing your car at our events. It sounds to me that if you can avaid the need for a cage, as long as you dont care about wether you are 'winning' or not you can still run the car with COM for fun which is what i do.
The only person I am really competing against is myself. (and if I happen to be competative in my run group then thats a bonus)
Cheers

After seeing a few wrecks during Labor Day FCA event at WGI and the video someone else posted here i may go welded cage. Anywho, will be at open track day on Thursday next week. See you there?

Honda CRX. Get 3 years out of Hoosiers, new rotors are $12. Scare Mustangs and Ferraris (Mustangs because CRX can corner and Ferraris because your whole car is worth less than their left rear wheel as you outbrake them into 3).
