How many shifts in a lap of Whiskey Hill? Thompson?
Happen to be thinking of Whiskey Hill today... and was going through a mental lap in both the Atom (1700 track weight/225 rear whp) and the Focus (2600 track weight/215 front whp)....and realized, even though they are two very different cars...I shift in almost the same spot (up or down) in one "qualifier" lap. Both cars are very different to drive....but the shift points are the same.
So..I was wondering if that held true for most cars/drivers at the same track? I really don't know...maybe low HP cars shift a lot more..? Maybe high HP shift less..?
I shift 8 times in one lap of the 14 turn Whiskey Hill layout: Down into 4th in 1, down into 3rd at 4, up to 4th before 8, down to 3rd in 9, up to 4th before 10, down into 3rd for 12, up in 4th at 14, and up to 5th before s/f line. 8 shifts.
Thompson is 2 shifts for me..in both cars. Down into 3rd at 1, and up into 4th after the hump "landing" out of 11.
Any way...just wondering aloud...thanks for playing..... Only one poll, so Thompson you have to post total..or not.....

Re: How many shifts in a lap of Whiskey Hill? Thompson?
I need another option. I only shift 3 times at Palmer.
Into 4th entering the front straight
Into 2nd at T4
Into 3rd exiting T5.
Miata is geared pretty much perfect for the track.
Thompson is more.
Into 4th on the front straight
Down to 2nd at the end of the straight.
Into 3rd between 2-3.
Back to 2nd for the clubhouse turn.
into 3rd before the bridge.

Interesting!! Three shifts at WH! And 5 at Thompson. I would have guessed the exact opposite to be true.
I run 23" tires on both cars with a 3:82 final on the Focus and 4:06 on the Atom, both 5 speeds, both with 6800rpm redlines.
Spec Miatas run around a 23" tire and a 3:90ish final.. and they weigh around 2400 track weight..with 110-120 rear whp..(right?) and although you have one double shift at each track..a big difference.
What is your rpm redline? It must be mid 7s? My Atom shifter is not as precise as I would like and there doesn't seem to be a simple solution..so it is distracting. The Focus doesn't mind all the shifts as long as you suggest a change..not demand. The Atom just plain balks into 12 and 1 unless it is done juuust right. Even then it occasionally does not want to cooperate. Three shifts at WH..! Thanks Jeff.

I counted 8 as well, and I am very low HP.
Down to 3rd into 1 for more power out.
Up to 4th as I hit the crest between 1 and 2
Down to 3rd for 3 and 4 and trying to carry speed uphill
Up to 4th through exit of carousel
Down to 3rd for 7
Up to 4th into 8
Down to 3 through 9 and 10
Up to 4th before last apex

Thompson is a 2 shift track down to 3 at the end of front straight up to 4 just before the flight over the hill at 11.
WH down to 3 at one down to 2 in 5 up to 3 on hill up to 4 on front straight.

I have found that with my stock rev limit, I need more shifting than I'd like. I'm shifting six times at Palmer, though I suppose I could cut that to five if I can clean my lines up. It would be more like three or four if I could get another four or five-hundred RPM.

SM (and my car) run a 4.30:1 rear end. I run a 7400 RPM redline, which is higher than SM would be.breakaway500 wrote:Interesting!! Three shifts at WH! And 5 at Thompson. I would have guessed the exact opposite to be true.

Interesting stuff
Here's where I'm shifting at Whiskey Hill, and I am seeing I could have dropped to 2nd in a few areas
T1: 4th to 3rd
T2: 3rd to 4th
T4: 4th to 3rd to 2nd
T5: 2nd to 3rd
Front Straight: 3rd to 4th
And here's where I'm shifting at Thompson
T1: 4th to 3rd
Front Straight: 3rd to 4th

Re: How many shifts in a lap of Whiskey Hill? Thompson?
At Whiskey Hill, it appears as if I have the clear record at 11. And that's only counting one occurrence for the 5-3 shift in turn 1.
And I like it.
And I like it.
Re: How many shifts in a lap of Whiskey Hill? Thompson?
Have not done Whisky Hill but I believe at Thompson I shift from 4th to 3rd at the end of the front straight and that is it and back to 4th at the jump and I am betting it might be the same at Whisky Hill

Butch..I'll bet you a steak dinner you use 8 or more shifts at Whiskey Hill.blazer178 wrote:Have not done Whisky Hill but I believe at Thompson I shift from 4th to 3rd at the end of the front straight and that is it and back to 4th at the jump and I am betting it might be the same at Whisky Hill
Quiet that truck down and come try it. Seriously. You will NOT be disappointed. You don't need maximum HP to be fast at WH.
I honestly did not think there would be so many different shift "patterns"..an eye opener. Minimum of three to a maximum of...11. Wow.
