Non fia adjuatable seats with bracing acceptable?

Post by Norwood1507 » Mon Feb 16, 2015 1:15 pm

I'm interested in racing with COM but I only have one fia seat, harness, and harness bar now. With recent back problems the fixed back seat is making my back worse to and from the track so I'm wondering if I can get adjustable (non fixed back, non fia seats) and have bracing off of a harness bar and be fine or if I have to have fia seats?

Not sure if it matters but I have a 2000 civic with motor swap and suspension upgrades

Hi

Thanks for asking. We do not require FIA seats to run in COM, but we do require that seats be properly supported -see "car requiremetns" in the rule book for the details.

I your case, I'd be inclined to accept your set-up, as long as your harness bar includes additional bracing from the bar to the back of the seat to prevent the seat back from falling backwards in an incident.

The hardware of an adjustable seat back isn't known for strength; in an impact, your weight will transfer forward against the belts, and then back against the seat, possibly breaking the seat back. If the seat back is not supported, the back ( and your back) will fall backwards, and if the harness bar is there, you risk a big knock on the back of the head, and possible neck injury.

If you like , take a picture of your setup and I'll have a look.

I don't have a new set up yet, I wanted to see if that was going to be acceptable before I bought seats, sliders, mounts, another harness, braces, and make some brackets with the seat supports but now I will work on that. Going to make some brackets to be bolted to the harness bar with the required surface area (or a little bigger) on the rear seat support that scca uses. And some adjustments so I can recline the seats for daily use, should help my back a lot, I'll post pictures when done but will probably be a couple months, hopfully right before race season!
