Helmets for 2015

Post by MiataSteve » Tue Dec 16, 2014 8:07 pm

I have been shopping for a new helmet. The sales rep at Pegasus told me my Snell SA2005 would still be SCCA legal in 2015. I know there was some confusion at the last drivers meeting as to dates. Any update?

Mine is so ratty I looking to replace it regardless. Is there anywhere in the Boston region that sells SA helmets other than HM$. My noggin is not easy to fit, so I would like to try before I buy. Already returned one.

personally I would not buy a 05 snel dated helmet .
also never buy a motorcycle helmet for driving a car .
a 05 is out not because it's unused age it's just simply because if you run with other clubs too some clubs do have a steadfast rule with helmet dates .

what helmet do you have now ?
do you like it and the way it fits ?

If the Bell fit you well, try another Bell. I shopped helmets last spring. I decided that i hadn't had a proper fitting helmet. The cheeks were always too loose on me on my HJC, but the smaller sizes didn't fit in the upper head. I went to HMS and nothing fit, except a Stilo Large (it was extremely snug). I didn't want to fork that much over. I went to the local racers expo, which had a Bell rep, and a bunch of helmets to try on. I bought a Bell M4, and it's fantastic. I went from a Large size HJC to a Small size Bell. I really like the quality and fit of the Bell.

I think you can try on Bells at The Race Depot in Marlborough. But, i don't know how much they stock. Call ahead.

I decided not to wait for the 2015, since my helmets are always nasty after 5 years. My HJC only lasted 3, and i was on my second set of cheek pads.

Stephen then look into the Bell sport .
I own a crap load of helmets being kind of a helmet junky . i own a M2 and 2 sports and a M4 they all fit me the same way (very good).
if you like the M2 then the sport or M4 should be in your liking also .

20 years ago when i just airbrushed helmets for a living i also was a helmet dealer selling Bell ,aria and shoei's .
bell helmets are good quality even with there lower cost ones .

if you mail ordered one it does not mean you can't return it if you don't like it .
i know you would rather not do it as returning things thru the mail really sucks .

this I'm sure as it always does when you say the word helmet dirty minded people chime in .
helmet care is very important !
people will use there helmet and never clean the thing . we all know what a dirty helmet smells like .
you use it and stick it back in the bag until the next time they need it and that is the worse thing for a helmet .
for care at best most wax the out side if the helmet but you have to also wash the liner .
baby shampoo is the best to wash the liners . no it will do nothing to a helmet if you get the hole thing wet .
for drying just stick it on a post and let the thing drip dry .
sweat is what does most of the damage to a helmet . your sweat breaks down the foam in the liner with proper care you should get 10 years of life out of a helmet under normal uses .

Steve

2015 helmets will not be available until late 2015.

2005 and 2010 helmets will be OK for use next year. I highly recommend a 2010, SA rated ( not motorcycle) and with a full face shield. The face shield is required if you want to run any NJ tracks, and a good idea anyway.

The 2015 edition of the COM rule book will address that 2005 and 2010 will be allowed in 2015

Side note:

Good quality balaclavas make helmets last a little longer. My AR10 is many years old and is still in excellent condition inside. I also wash the pads after every event.
