Wheel inspection meeting?
Wheel inspection meeting?
In light of recent occurrences of cracks in wheels owned by some members, I'm wondering if there is interest in a "wheel inspection party". We're pretty rough on wheels, especially if you're running at NHMS regularly, so inspections should be part of your track preparations.
Bring your clean wheels ( or clean them when you get here, I'll provide a bucket and hose) and we'll visually inspect , then a dye penetrant /UV light further inspection. I figure we can do it om a Sat or Sun morning, get some coffee and donuts, have a few us your fellow racers around to help ( more eyes to see) . Nominal donation per wheel to help pay for the materials.
so, vote your thoughts, and in a couple weeks, if there's enough interest, we'll put something together for early April
Thanks Tom

Re: Wheel inspection meeting?
in the classifieds I made a comment about the K1 wheels I had .
one wheel was leaking air all the time slowly . about 8 to 10 lbs every week putting it in a dunk tank you would see no air leaking I changed the valve stem reseated the bead and used a bead seal .
I magnafluxed the wheel and found a small crack were the spoke met the rim .
I then tig weld the crack but would never use the rims for track use again .
if your using cast wheel and low cost ones it's not a bad idea to check your wheels for cracks more then you would for forged or machined wheels .

I think tires off would be best, but I think the most likely failure points are in the spokes and lug areas, so might be useful even if the tires were still on.
We're most likely going to use a something you spray on, wipe off, spray developer, then dry and view under a UV light. A true magnaflux machine would be nice but not in the budget.

Re: Wheel inspection meeting?
I would come to help/assist if I am available. I have new in box wheels so not concerned about damage yet.

Re: Wheel inspection meeting?
for magnafluxing does not magnetize the rim it's self but uses the pos and neg fields so the iron powder will settle in the areas were there are cracks .

Re: Wheel inspection meeting?
Dave, you cannot use the magnetic Magnafluxing technique on nonferrous metals.(aluminum, magnesium, brass etc) That is what the spray-on/UV light crack detection system is for.
Magnetic Particle Inspection (Magnaflux)
Magnetic particle inspection is a nondestructive inspection methods used for defect detection. The method is used to inspect a variety of product forms such as castings, forgings, and weldments. The only requirement from an inspectability standpoint is that the component being inspected must be made of a ferromagnetic material such iron, nickel or cobalt, or some of their alloys. Ferromagnetic materials are materials that can be magnetized to a level that will allow the inspection to be effective. Many different industries use magnetic particle inspection for determining a component's fitness-for-use.

For aircraft aluminum testing we use the Zyglo process.

a friend took the rim to were he works it came back with it circle around the crack . he said he magnafluxed it ?

Re: Wheel inspection meeting?
Zyglo is the dye/UV light crack reveal system that Magnaflux corporation sells...so your friend could have "Magnafluxed" it, but usually, when someone uses that term,it means something was Magnetic particle inspected, aka Magnafluxed.

Re: Wheel inspection meeting?
my friend rick had his yearly Daytona 500 party yesterday so I was asking him about checking cracks in metals .
he's the one that does it for me when ever I need it done .
he told me that using the term magnafluxing is totally the wrong term to use .
it's used as what people call plastic body filler as bondo .
bondo like magnaflux is just a trade name not the product or proses .
he did get into all the different types ,ways and methods to check for cracks . I learned allot !
on Wednesday I have to go there and he is going to show me how to do it for my self on different materials .
i'm looking forward to it !

Re: Wheel inspection meeting?
so I went do my friends shop on Wednesday .
he went thru all the different types of systems they use to check different types of materials for defects .
they have a system that uses sound waves not really to see if there is a crack but to see if it could crack over time .
