source for spec miata NACA duct vent window

Post by n1gzd » Tue Dec 31, 2013 11:57 am

Hi,
Does anyone have a suggestion for a source of vent window for my 1995 miata? I found this one:
http://www.weekend-racer.com/spec-miata ... p_313.html

Is anyone familiar with this (note: pictured vent window is their earlier design, apparently they have a new one).

Two more things,
does anyone have a suggested source for window nets and center cage net? I want the window net to leave enough of a gap for me to reach my arm out for point by. Which end of the net should this gap be located (forward or rearward)? Is this ok? I was thinking it should be forward end.

thanks,
Rebecca

http://www.advanced-autosports.com/inde ... cts_id=126 for the window vents.

I think they carry nets as well. Dave (at Advanced) is a big supporter of Spec Miata. Reasonable shipping charges, too.

I've had cars with both a mesh net and a wide ribbon tape net. I really prefer the visibility with the ribbon rather than the mesh (like http://www.advanced-autosports.com/inde ... cts_id=104 )

HMS also carries nets.

why in gods name don't you just make them your self ?
I never buy parts like that ! for less then half the cost you can make the thing your self .
for about 35 dollars you can buy all the material's you need to make them for both sides and after the vent glass is out of it's frame it's only about 2 or 3 hours work to cut the lexan the same shape as the old vent window using the old glass as your template and the naca duct then rivet the two together or they have adhesive that will work .
either way you still have to remove the vent glass from the frame if you buy the duct premade or not so your only added time is what it takes to build the parts . the money you save is now paying your labor to build it and you can say you made them your self .

will decide that after I do the homework. If someone sells them already fabricated for $48 each that might be cheaper than my time. I have way too many unfinished projects.

the funny thing about cooling ducts are there great but only for a short time in the season .
spring and full you will be hating them and end up blocking them off so your not freezing you butt off .
the smart thing to do is just get a piece of the cheap neoprene tubing duct and zip tie it to the door mirror between the vent glass and the mirror .
point one end right into the on coming air flow and the other end right at you .
then when it rains or cold out you not having to tape over the opening of the duct you just cut a wire tie and remove the ducting .
the best thing is to have a cool suit ! you people with no door glass have it made ! hot you don't know what hot is !
have your seat back and fire wall all one piece of the car and a motor 4 inches from the fire wall .
I carry a QT drink bottle in the car and drink all of it in one 20 minute run session .
to drink just push the button !

I was racing in NJ in November and had my naca duct open. I have taped over it when we were at the Glen and it was in the 50s, but other than that it gets quite a bit of use.

It's no work to tape over the duct with painters tape if it gets cold, and then if you're too hot on track you can just reach up and tear the tape off!

I did them on my 944 and removed them after the 1st season to just use the duct tubing .
I had ducting tubes that ran right from the NACA duct and pointed right at me on both sides of the car .
if your just using the naca duct it's not all that bad but when you put tubing on them and then run it right over to were your sitting in the car you will freeze for two 3rd's of the season . then when it rained it pores water all over you .
I will not install them in any more of my cars not even the diasio that is fully inclosed .
when I do want a little more cooling in the diasio I just use the cool suit and most times I only use that 5 or 6 times a year .
with the 944 I will just wire tie a piece of tubing to the mirror base and be done with it . cost is nothing works better than the naca duct because it points right into the wind .
when it rains there is no stick tape mess you have to deal with from the wet tape or air pressure pushing off the wet tape if you taped the inside of the duct .
personally i'm not sold on them for self cooling there great for cooling brakes but not for my self .
there are much better ways to cool your self with out dealing with NACA ducts to do it .

Best/easiest solution for plugging a NACA duct is with the top of a rattle can placed closed (top) side IN. Add duct tape around the plastic top for a perfectly sealed fit in the duct's hole. I always unplug my ducts unless it's raining. The driver's side cools my left hand and chest, the right side draws air for my helmet blower.

Interesting note: I've been informed by my neighbor the State Trooper that replacing glazing forward of the B post with acrylic/lexan immediately causes the car to fail inspection in both MA and NH. Apparently it's an NTSB rule.

Not a problem for some cars....
