Newbe Questions.

Post by 75 Tom » Fri Sep 13, 2013 7:09 am

I currently have a current SCCA regional competition license and 1990 miata that runs ssm class and have raced and HPDE's at NHMS, LRP and WGI. Time Trails sounds like a great way to improve my lap times and the added element of racing against the clock has me interested. I would like to attend the next event @ NHMS and have a couple of questions. Looking at the rule book and trying to understand what class I would be placed in I see the Prepared car section " PREPARED B (PB) # as the closest description of my car is that correct? How do you handle the licensing for drivers how have experience already?

Thanks Tom

Hi Tom:
Thank you for your interest in COM. It's nice to hear that our club offers additional benefits for your activities.
In response to your questions ...
BEING CLEARED FOR SOLO with COM:
In order to ride "solo" at COM you need to be checked by a COM instructor. You can be a licensed Formula One driver fwiw but at COM you are always checked by an instructor.
We are a point-by club and that is strictly observed for safety.
It is difficult to determine the process for approval and I believe it's case by case depending on your exposure and track experience.
Notably many drivers who started at COM do well at SCCA, goes to say we must be doing something right (hopefully in my classroom ...   ).
CAR CLASSIFICATION:
Hummm... I see you drive a Miata  ... remind me to tell you about those fake Alfas ...
All kidding aside, best suggestion is to contract our Chief Scrutineer (Tom) who can be found in this directory: http://www.comscc.org/about-com/directory/

We look forward to seeing you at our next NHMS event (October 12-13) :sunny:

Hi Tom, I would try to class your car under the Touring rules as you would most likely see more competition there. There are only a few mods that would currently disqualify you from Touring such as no dash.

Regarding your experience just note that in the info field during registration and the chief instructor will get you lined up for a check ride.

Tom

I think you'll find COM a good place to get those extra track miles you're looking for.

As Chris suggested, have a look at our classing spreadsheet for Touring. We currently have a few ITA and Spec Miata cars running in T40 or T50 classes depending on the specific modifications.

Thanks so much for the friendly replys.. I am really excited about joining you guys at the track. The other concern I have is the car has a roll cage with a petty bar running thru the passenger area and would be hard to fit up with a passenger seat and would not be able to accommodate an instructor. Is there a work around for this?

Thanks Tom.

Hi Tom,

I would email our chief instructor Will Martins. chiefinstructor@comscc.org to discuss that.

Hi Chris , thanks I will do that. Were do I find the spreadsheet that simplifies the process of assigning your car to its proper Touring class?

Hi Tom,

The link to the spreadsheet is right here underneath the 2013 rule book.

The club is paying for camping and over night security on Friday and Saturday nights. You can enter anytime. Prepare for 30 degree weather!

They just need to stop at the administration building and sign the waver to enter (and collect a wrist band). They can enter at any time, no need for you to be there.

Hi Tom,

Welcome aboard.

You mentioned bringing a pit crew. Since many of us are drivers and we do our own pit crew duties, are you able to rent your pit crew out. They could gain variable experience working on many different vehicles. just kiddin

Also, If you staying later on Saturday, you may want to sign up for the COM BBQ immediately starting after the last session on Saturday. You can meet many of the COm members and share some experiences.

Sign up is on the registration sight - look for attendees tab and then the social events tab.

have a great time,

SnB
