Not quicker than SPC, but .01 sec quicker than T100! Hopefully that says more about Nick's quickness than my slowness...

I didn't have the tires, that's for sure! Wheelspin everywhere :p
Having ridden with Nick, I figure he's getting 99% out of the car. In my best days, I was getting maybe 95% out of the 240z or s2000. Probably only getting 85% out of the rx-7 beastie...

A good post for the rules forum... The R1-S is a ridiculously good tire for sure. Across most reports I've read, it's slightly faster (maybe a few tenths) than the A6. I don't have back-to-back data so I don't know personally. NASA did independent testing at the beginning of the year and gave the R1-S 2 more points than the A6/Hankook z214 C91/Goodyear Eagle RS AC, which is ~1 point in our system; my cousin who runs with them indicated this has a bit to do with how much wider the R1-S is in reality compared to the advertised size. Some autox-ers go back-and-forth and still prefer the Hoosier for its stiffer sidewall and responsiveness.

I can tell you that at NHMS they were ~1s faster than my regular BFG R1 tire (1:19.8 versus 1:20.7), and an estimated ~2s faster at Tremblant (1:54.0 versus 1:55.8, although my TT wasn't as good of a lap from a driving perspective, losing a couple tenths at the bridge and namerow). I don't have the back-to-back at Summit Point as the track was still drying (1:25.3 with Lemoine riding along versus 1:27.5 when the track was still just 95% dry on day 1) Some of that has to do with the really hot weather - the cooler it is, the more the advantage on the soft tire. Also, Pete McParland has a set, albeit a bit older and from last year, and I believe he was about 1.5s faster at both NHMS and Tremblant when switching from the 255 RA-1 to the 235 R1-S.

Best of all, for me anyway, is that I don't ever practice on this tire - I just guess on tire pressures, strap it on for the TT, and run it. The feel and slip properties are similar enough to the regular R1 that I'm usually just wasting cycles (read: $) if I run it for a practice run on day 2 prior to the TT. This bit me a tad at Tremblant, as I could have used a 4th or 5th lap to dial it in, but it's not worth buying multiple sets of these things each year.

Phil's Tire Service has the best price on the tire - $185 in Miata size (Nate indicated they used to run the R1 until it was discontinued in their size - looks like it's back).

...with all that being said, I could see 1 additional point for the R1-S being justified (from 9 to 10), but not more than that without more conclusive data.

Either way, in 2013 it's a 9 point tire...Fred, perhaps you should stop running by yourself in PC, buy a set to run on your SE36, and come down to T60.

Nick won't beat Will at NHMS south oval. Anyone with a Torquey motor benefits at a track like Tremblant for obvious reasons. The oval at NHMS will be an equalizer and you should see Will dust Nick this time around (sorry Nick, but not really lol).

So to be honest I am curious if Sam does not agree with the new touring class system? Are you just tyring to stir the pot or do you really believe it is flawed? Personally I think it is a great start but does have some flaws, like any new rule system would have but I will not go into details in this particular thread.

The lap times would be the same, but the results would be different if I was running in SPC this year.
