New Member Intro

Post by whymiata » Tue Apr 23, 2013 11:03 pm

Just wanted to say hello. I'm new to the club and will be attending my first event at Summit next week. I'm in the middle of sorting out what to bring and how I'm going to pack the car (it's yet another Miata). Should be an interesting trip!

I'm a total noob and I've never driven on track at speed before. After about 25 years of wanting to get on track I've finally have a car that I don't depend on for daily transport + just a bit of both free time and disposable income.

The car is a blue 1996 with a lighter blue hard top. Bone stock except for seats/belts/bar/Koni's.

Looking forward to meeting other members and not screwing up.

Welcome Dave!

It sounds like you did all the right mods first so you are one step ahead already.

You're going to love Summit Point, and of course we have the best instructors around!

^That is a very good question, I assume for the belts to work he has one (hope so), also wondering on brake pad selection.

But Welcome! Always love to see more miatas in the club. Enjoy the trip down there. I have a "list" that I print out for every event as a check. If you'd like a copy of it just send me an email at pgiurlando at gmail and I send it to you.

if you don't have a roll bar i am now building weld in ones (better than the hard dog bars) for 500 dollars installed and painted . i'm also working on bolt in bars but that will be another week or two before they are set to build as i still have to finish the jigs for the tubing so they will be welded all the same .
they are being built using .140 wall DOM tubing in 1.75 " OD .

He said "seats/belts/bar/Koni's" which I presume means roll bar and not the refreshment kind. :)

All set with the roll bar (BossFrog) The brake pads are Hawk DTC-60's - probably a bit overkill for a novice on street tires.

Packing will be a challenge - am I the only nut case driving thier Miata to WV? Thanks for the offer Paul, I''ll shoot you a note.

In the interest of full disclosure, Summit Point is somewhat of a home away from home. My newphews live in the area and are regulars and I've been to the track a half a dozen times and have done a few "parade" laps and some ride alongs. I'm looking forward to the instruction and driving it at speed.

Well, lots of learning was going during my first track experience. I’m still processing much of it. I didn’t quite accomplish my goal of not screwing up.

I did run most of the day Monday, even after picking up my little "souvenir" dent. [Note to self: pull ABS fuse] I was starting to get the hang of the track - I don't have much to compare to but I really liked it. In the end I decided to sit out Tuesday AM given it was still wet, a bit colder, and my summer street tires just weren't going to do anything to boost my confidence. Just watched and learned – I did see lot's of "Oh Jesus" moments in turn 3 Tuesday AM ;)

I need to thank my instructor Nick F for a great job and being encouraging and patient with me and Nate H for his classroom instruction. Also a special thanks goes to Steve H and Peter P for adopting me and keeping me and my stuff out of the rain.
