Paint Shop Recommendations

Post by modifiede30 » Sun Nov 18, 2012 8:31 am

I'm getting ready to have my car painted after some front end restoration work and thought I'd check to see if anyone owned a body shop not too far from me - I'm in Bolton, MA. Would prefer to give the work to someone here if they're reasonable with pricing. The car's not ever going to be a show car, so I'm not so concerned with it being restored to its original state, but it would be nice if it were all one color :P

If its a racecar, Maaco in Framingham. Perfect for racecar quality and cheap. You won't feel as bad next time you crash. I know several paint shops that have prepped cars and taken them to Maaco for paint. They paint for little more than the materials would cost you.

paint shop ? ME ! i own a paint body and fabrication shop . i build chassis , roll cages , roll bars , do body work and painting along with airbrushing helmets . i opened 17 years ago just to do airbrushing but one thing lead to another and now it's pretty much any thing you can thing of that needs to be done to a race car . i even have done a crap load of motor swaps for the 944 V8's . the only things we don't really do is build motors for customers .
i tend to cut racers good deals on painting there race cars . 203 407 1708 David

Great, I'll be in touch. I have a front bumper that I'm going to repair and prep in advance of having it sent for paint, and then it'll be pretty close to ready to go. Its an estoril blue m-roadster. The bumper and hood are from a different colored car, and the hood has a couple minor blemishes I'd like to have repaired. The rest of the car is in great condition so no painting is needed, just front end re-spray and minor repair to a couple spots. Then I was thinking of having a solid matte black stripe put down the middle of the car - still debating if a decal could be used.

Where are you located? 203 is CT correct?

yes my shop is in hamden ct .
most of the time i will do bumpers for racers from 125 to 150 dollars repaired , preped and painted . the price all has to do with the color . reds ,orange and yellows along with pearl colors cost more it has to do with pigments in the colors . they charge me more to buy them some the cost has to get passed on to the end user .
when it comes to colors the name has no meaning it has to be looked up by the color number . on a bmw they have the name and color number on the strut tower . the name is in big letters and the number is printed very small .
if i remember right the color # is 335 . there is also a under hood color that is a little deferent because they don't clear the under sides of there panels and don't use any metallics in thoughs colors .

Yes, 335 is the right color code.

For the cost you mentioned on the bumper I may just have you do it all - there is a crack in bottom of the bumper and some road rash that needs to be filled and then painted to match the rest of the car. The hood's silver, and needs to be switched over to the Estoril blue color.

I would probably mount the bumper cover and just bring the car down sooner than later if you fix the bumper cover. If I take some pics of the car, could you give me an estimate without seeing the car?

like a said the cost of the bumper should be about that .
the fenders your looking at about the same for each fender . 125 ?
then the hood the out side is about 200 to 225 or so that depends on the damage to it . if there are just a couple of dings your looking at 200 dollars . for the under side if you want the under hood color it's 150 for that . if you want to just go with the out side color your looking at 125 . the reason is i would have to mix a deferent batch of paint for the under hood .
your looking to spend 700 to 900 dollars to paint the nose and repair the little dings and dents .
the tear on the bumper as long as it's not real bad i will fix at the same price i gave you along with the road rash .
the tear i should be able to melt the thing back together as long as it not TPO plastic and if it's a OE bmw bumper it's not TPO plastic . it should be PP plastic ? if you want me to reassemble every thing it will add alittle to the end cost and bring the price up to maybe 800 to 1000 dollars .

Thanks. Don't need any painting on the fenders, just the hood and bumper cover. Would it make sense to just bring down the hood and bumper cover rather than the whole car?

you could just bring down the parts .
here the thing though ! i was planing on blending the color onto the fenders for a color match . there are 5 what are called variants on that color so by just a panel paint i can't say it's going to match 100% . my paint system is BASF glasurit and that is the same that BMW uses at the factory to paint there cars along with porsche , ferrari , vw audi , lamborghini , and many others top car makers .
if you just want to do the two panels we could do that i will use the standard formula and see what we get for a color match . it could be dead on ?

I could bring down the fenders - they're already off the car because I was cleaning behind them. That'll give you something to match to.

you could do that . they only have color chips for 2 of the variants but it will give me an idea .

if you would like to drop the hood and bumper off this weekend i will be at the shop working on my 948 porsche .
