Newbie again Helmet Question

Post by bimmer-e24 » Tue Jan 22, 2013 5:59 pm

What helmet would you reccomend for a 68yr old coming back to track days after 35yrs.

Can I get something decent for around $200. Brand name & model would be a big help.

Also, if there's a supplier you go to, I would support them with my purchase.

Thanks in advance.

HI Bob,

Welcome back! Our friends at Drivers Supply have quite a few helmets. This may fit the bill.

Welcome to a fellow oldster!

A suggestion & a couple of notes: if it's convenient, try a few on before deciding - you may find that a particular brand's helmets fit you better than the others; an SA2010 helmet will be accepted until 2021, while any remaining SA2005 units won't be accepted after 2015; and, if the club returns to New Jersey Motorsports Park, a full-face helmet with face shield is required by that track.

Welcome back and no offense but you may only want a helmet for a few years so consider buying an SA 2005 helmet. The "older" SA helmets are discounted by over 50%, if you can find them.
p.s. Got any old photos of COM events, cars, and people? Pls share!

I've found that the HJC AR-10 is probably your best bang for the buck full face SA helmet out there right now...

I have been VERY happy with mine even though I was skeptical when it was recommended to me.

FWIW I went from a Simpson to this helmet, I like it. Especially the removable/washable Nomex inner liner. :D

I also have the AR-10 and love it. Very comfortable and a great price point. I also got an extra liner so I can swap it out if it gets too sweaty.

That is clever Gordo.. I have an AR10 as well. I had been pulling the liner out of mine as the day ends. One time the liner was so nasty, I ran the pieces through the laundry at the hotel on the night in between the school and TT days.

It works great, like having a fresh helmet every day. Too bad the chin straps don't come off too.

I have this helmet and really like it:
http://www.saferacer.com/g-force-pro-cf ... uctid=2520

It's my first full face, and it doesn't seem to weight much more than my older open face. The liner doesn't come out, but I use a Balaclava. You can purchase some really inexpensive ones from HMS (carting ones I think, $5-$10 each) which is what I did when I first used it; but I plan to get a 100% CarbonX one that can be thrown in the wash between events. The Nomex stuff is more of a pain to clean I guess, needs a special cleaner.

as a airbrush artiest i paint about 3 to 5 helmets a month .
not to put down or say some thing is junk and put down what some one owns BUT .
the HJC helmets i would never ever put on my head !
when i paint helmets they have to get torn down to a bare shell the quality of that helmet is very pore !
they must pay SNEL to get them to pass !

as for the care of your helmets you should wash the liners with baby shampoo .
my self i just take my helmets into the shower with me and wash them when i'm washing my self .
i wash my helmets after every event them because the hole liner does not come out on my helmets i just place it on a cameras tripod to dry .
the soap and water will not harm your helmet in any way in fact it will help make them last longer .
leaving your sweat does more damage to a helmet than a 1000 washes will . sweat has salt in it and the salt will brake down the lineing take years off the life of your helmet .

Probably depends on how he decides to hold the helmet in the water...
