GPS lap timers
GPS lap timers
What's out there for GPS lap timers these days? I don't need anything fancy like data acquisition. Lap times and maybe some predictive or +/- info is all I want. I borrowed an AIM Solo last season and liked it, although the desktop software that came with it was a mess (usability wise). I did a quick internet search and couldn't find any competing products. Anyone know of anything similar, or is AIM the only choice?
Thanks
Thanks
Re: GPS lap timers
AIM's probably your best best. I use a Racepak system, and it's good, though the software is behind AIM from a usability point of view.
The Race Technology DL series have decent software, I think.

Re: GPS lap timers
I can say from my own experience, stay away from the Racelogic Performancebox. I had two of them...one actually went out the window once at NHMS..and it wasn't by accident...
Damn things had minds of their own some days...and the menus were very difficult to navigate. When they worked..they were great. I updated the firmware religiously, sent them in for "repair"..and even tried remote antennas..but finally had enough of their stubborn desires to malfunction..and went to a Hotlaps beacon unit. (It seems to work every time,no mater what the weather etc)

It's not what you drive, it's how you drive. "Lap times matter"

I also use the AIM solo and the device itself could not be easier to use. Turn it on, set to predictive mode, and you're done. Pretty easy to create tracks in conjunction with google maps (lat/long coordinates). The analysis software is kludgy but actually pretty powerful once you get used to it.
Also, I don't think you can find anything cheaper on the market.

Ah, good point. I haven't used Harry's, but I have tried a few others that are cheap/free on Android. In general they seem to do the job, but can get a bit sketchy at tracks with little/no cell reception. I've had great luck at NHMS, but at places like Summit Point/NJMP (albeit on T-Mobile) they've failed completely.n1gzd wrote:I am using Harry's lap timer on my iphone.

Re: GPS lap timers
The AIM Solo works pretty well, and the software is powerful enough once you figure it out. I find that I don't actually use the predictive as it is too much of a distraction, I pretty much just glance down at my lap time as I cross the start/finish to see how I did.
My only real complaint at this point is they still have an issue with data export which can cause it to "drop" data making it impossible to sync to video at times.

Whatever you're doing it's working. I didn't use it long enough to know if the predictive times can help me.
I think I remember you mentioning that data drop bug when you were helping me with another issue where it was rounding all of my times to tenths. I never figured that one out either.

Re: GPS lap timers
Hi MIck:
On my Android I had Trackmaster and it was great. Now upgraded to an iPhone5 and searching as well. Tackmaster NOT available for iPhone
I looked at (CO name/APP) for APP that are basically all under $40 (most acutally less than $10):
RacerRender/TrackAdditct
Epiphero LLC/Race TImer +
FTLapps/TrackDayPro (*)
(*) I am communicating with them for this app. Seems more comprehensive but I still need to confirm a few things on what I get that will suit my needs.

Re: GPS lap timers
except for when I want to download new track data (at home before I visit a new track), or if I wanted to upload my times for all to see (mine are not worth it) I don't think that internet access is needed for Harrys lap timer Pro. I am also using it for track video as well. If you have OBDII you can also overlay some computer data (such as what gear you are in) if you have a bluetooth OBDII transmitter.

I really like the predictive timer. It shows you if you did something right or wrong with a quick glance.

Re: GPS lap timers
Predictive timing is priceless imo. Especially when learning a new track. You can see in real time where you are slow. There's nothing worse than blowing an exit and watching the gap open up over a long straight. The ultimate reality check. I catch myself staring it at for laps at a time.
Re: GPS lap timers
I have a Solo as well.
I use predictive when I'm alone in the car and working turn by turn, and it is very addictive. I use the regular timer for hot lap rides, or I have a student in my car.

Predictive is even more helpful when you co-drive and have a reference lap to chase.
